L.A. The city of CHAMPIONS

In any professional sport winning the championship is the biggest thing a team can accomplish if its the Super Bowl (Football), MLS Cup (soccer), World Series (Baseball), NBA Finals (Basketball), or even the Stanley cup (Hockey). But one rare thing is to have 2 champions come from the same city.

2020 may not be the year for most people but for the Las Angles Lakers and the L.A. Dodgers they are having a good time in the city of champions. The lakers won their 17th championship and for Lebron James his 6th and his 6th MVP. Shortly after the Lakers won the L.A. Dodgers won the World Series in game 6 against the Tampa Bay Rays.

The only problem is because of COVID there will be no parades to celebrate these amazing accomplishments. This is the first time a city has won in different sports in more than 50 years the last being San Diego.

NASA discovers water on the moon!

NASA made an amazing discovery 2 days ago with Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy or SOFIA for short. SOFIA used infrared light to confirm that there is in fact water on the moon, enough to fill up a 12 oz water bottle. This is a big deal because when the Apollo astronauts came back in 1969 it was thought to be completely dry.

Water was discovered in the Clavius Crater which is located in the southern hemisphere and can actually be seen from earth. “We had indications that H2O – the familiar water we know – might be present on the sunlit side of the Moon,” said Paul Hertz, director of the Astrophysics Division in the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters.

This now being confirmed is a big deal because in order for life to exist as we know, water is a crucial element. I’m not saying that there is life on the moon because the moon has no atmosphere which means no oxygen. But if there is water on the moon that we thought was to be completely dry then there could be water on other planets that we didn’t know about.

Several things could be at play in the creation of this water. “Micrometeorites raining down on the lunar surface, carrying small amounts of water, could deposit the water on the lunar surface upon impact. Another possibility is there could be a two-step process whereby the Sun’s solar wind delivers hydrogen to the lunar surface and causes a chemical reaction with oxygen-bearing minerals in the soil to create hydroxyl.”

These are very valid theories for how water became to be on the moon. In my opinion I think that meteorites carrying water crashes into the moon. I think this because the water was found at the bottom of the craters and it has been proven that some meteorites carry small amounts of water, so to me this makes the most sense.

What you need to look for in tonights debate!

The second presidential debate is to be held tonight in Nashville TN and there are some things people should notice during tonights debate. The first big change is that the candidates mic will be muted for 2 minutes while the other one is talking. This is to prevent the other party from interfering and making the other get off task. This was a huge problem with Trump interrupting Biden in the first debate.

One thing to look out for is will Trump dial it back? He was a little reckless and obnoxious during the first debate so it will be interesting to see how he responds to the mics being muted, will he yell instead? will he let Biden finish? All eyes are on president Trump and how he carries himself throughout this debate.

Another thing to look for is Joe running out the clock. Meaning he takes what is asked and he turns it into an intelligent answer one that relates to the American people. Biden doesn’t have to do much as he leads in the polls, the one thing that would hold him back is if he answers a question poorly or says something that he might regret later.

Either way I think that it is still ridicules that this is the best America has to offer with candidates. My wish is to watch an actual debate tonight and not 2 grown men act like 11 year olds arguing to their mom. I think that both need to take this seriously especially President Trump who always seems to be the instigator. This debate is forsake going to be interesting and fun to watch.

Real life lightsaber!

James Hobson has created a real life lightsaber from the movie series ‘Star Wars’. Using laser technology the YouTube created a real life lightsaber that can cut through wood, plastic and even some types of metal.

The lightsaber is made out of plasma that is held together by a magnetic beam to make it look and resemble a real like lightsaber. “By adding additional chemicals to the mix, different colors can be made: Sodium chloride (table salt) turns the beam yellow, Boric acid makes green; strontium chloride goes red; and calcium chloride produces an amber color”.

Engineer creates real-life 'Star Wars' lightsaber that can slice through metal

This real lightsaber was only a matter of time before someone built it. I think that it is one of the coolest things someone has invented in a really long time. Having one of these would protect your house or yourself more than a gun, especially if you had a red one. I would certainly buy one if the price was right. But I think this is awesome and James Hobson did an amazing job with this cool sword.

Is the debate canceled?

The debate that was scheduled for next week has just been announced that it will be held virtually instead of in person. Originally the debate was supposed to be in Miami Florida in a town hall.

Since the debate is now being held virtually Joe Biden and his campaign have agreed but Trump and his campaign said no. “I’m not going to do a virtual debate, it’s a waist of my time” says president Trump. There is no law that states president Trump has to participate so he doesn’t have to show up.

Part of the reason why president Trump won’t participate is because they would be able to stop his audio whenever they want so he can’t interrupt. In someways this would be a good thing because there would be fewer interruptions and the debate would move more smoothly.

In my opinion I think the debate should be unperson but since Trump has covid its for the safety of everyone to have the debate virtual. I think that it’s fine if he doesn’t want to do it because it can be hard having a debate over the computer. However he could have been nicer and respect the debate some more

The change is now!

Greta Thunberg from Sweden gave a speech yesterday about climate change. She spoke on behalf of climate justice.

In her speech she describes how mankind is moving “forward” with their inventions and products but don’t even consider the mess that they leave behind. “We cannot solve a crisis without treating it as a crisis.” Thunberg also said that we need to keep fossil fuels in the ground and stop bringing so much of it out.

“We have run out of excuses and we are running out of time.” The time is now and it starts with us recognizing the problem and developing a plan for how to fix this problem.

A chat with returning mustang!

Morningside Graduate, Steven Postolka came back to talk to the class Tuesday about his life and what he does for a career.

Steven went to Morningside and double majored in Political Science and Mass com and went on to law school at the university of Iowa. Then got a job for Sioux City, “I represent the city in court if they are being sued or if the city wants to sue I represent them as well”. Steven stressed that a lot of his work is not in the court room but in fact outside of it.

Sioux City isn’t that big of a city but how many times does it get sued in a year? “Around tens of thousands but the cases aren’t big enough for the ones for me to handle.” A lot of the cases that come through or against the city are minor like workers comp. “But sometimes we get sued for claims as big as a million dollars, those are the types of cases that I handle.”\

Since Steven is good at his job it has opened the door of opportunity to other states and other cities that are bigger. But Steven. said “I like this city, I like my pay and I’m happy here, its hard for me to move on.”

Makes sense that Steven wants to stay because he went to college here and is very familiar to the place. It was awesome having him in and having him talk about his work experiences and what he has achieved so far in his career. He is a really interesting guy and it was cool to have him come back to his old college.
