On Friday, we attended a guest speaker by the name of Mat Reynders in the Yockey room. There was suppose to be two guest speakers but only one showed due to delayed flight, but we still learned a little bit of what the ladies job was and a look into NASA’s future. This was probably one of the better speakers I have listened to at Morningside. Mats way of looking at careers and learning from mentors really opened up my eyes and I think the eye’s of many, because college kids are so uncertain when they leave college. Also, he was such a great speaker and had good clear English, which made the presentation that much better. I can totally relate his speech to my life because I too look at some of my classes at Morningside and wonder where am I going to use this class in the future and I still question what kind of job I want to end up with. Mat highlighted that you need to do what is important for you and I agree with that statement greatly because that is the only way to be successful in life, not what other people for want.
The movie that I watched was The Constant Gardner. The movie is based on a Multinational Corporation that is doing drug testing on foreign countries. The characters are showing what they believe is right and what they believe is wrong and they are trying to do anything possible to protect foreign countries and put a stop to the issue. These big companies are exploiting the poor countries and making millions while doing it, but they are doing it in all the wrong ways possible. The way they do it is by bribes because poor countries are known for taking bribes very easy.
There are many issues that are present in the movie. Many of them had to do with traveling from country to country because they are not respecting cultural differences and they just walk on in because they got money. Also, another issue was when an individual is close to corrupt the MNC they are usually watched and then when they push to far for the truth they are punished greatly and usually death to maintain a good rep for the company. With as poor as the countries are that they are working in, means they can get away with almost anything and that makes it really wrong, but its done all over the world.
I think that the message is directed toward the girl that is getting married. It is a message from the female, to the girl about here stealing problem and the killing. Its easy to see that the married lady did do the stealing just because of her eye contact while talking.
Yes, I believe that restrictions should be in place when women are being placed in a foreign country. When it comes to females and other counties, in some they are not allowed much freedom at all so it would not be productive for the business or the female in that spot. Multinational Corporations need to take into account the different culture and values of their international partners and play by their rules other wise they will not get very far. MNC needs to do what is the best for their business and taking this issue into account I feel is a big deal.
In the Middle East, therr are strict rules and customs in place to prevent woman from getting very far up are the totem pole. They are restricted in the education that they can get. Also most woman in the Middle East are not even allowed to work and are suppose to stay at home mothers. When women are treated like a possession rather than how we view women in the US, it is hard to send a female manager across the sea to manage a warehouse or run a facility over their. I think MNC needs to look at every option first and do some studying on the country because most people do not know enough about other counties. Also MNC need to pull the females that are up for the position and explain to them why they are not being pick so they don’t feel like they are being violated. The last option for MNC if they do have to send a female, is to well educate the female the best they can. Sending the wrong person could cost a corporation millions of dollars, and it is even possible to lose business just because the company thought that female was the best fit person for the job.
People have to have an open mind and realize that sexism is present in international business. It is a problem, but it is one that will never be changed because of different cultures and values. Its different around the world and females have to realize that when going into a business that deals internationally. I think a female should not get discouraged when they are told they can not go to a country because women are not viewed in that country in a good way. They should be thankful they are born and raised in the US, the land of opportunities and think how good they got in compared other countries.
hello, good morning all.
