Game Review: One Night Ultimate Werewolf

By Kayla Perkins–Werewolves…wake up! It’s time to play a game, and see where your true allies lie in this new card/app game that puts friendships to the test.

This game is One Night Ultimate Werewolf for 3-10 players, though it does best with at least 5 people, as each player takes their turn playing a role only they know via cards. The app does a lot of the work, telling each player what to do on their turn. While not required, the app makes the game much easier, and allows each player to participate, rather than having one be the speaker.

The app is free, and is available for iOS and Android.

One Night Ultimate Werewolf is interesting in that the game is played in rounds, but during each round the players close their eyes until their card is called. Each card plays a different role, and can only act during their turn. For example, the Seer can look at other players’ cards, but if they see a Werewolf they become one. The Troublemaker can swap two players’ cards, so someone could be the Werewolf and not know it.

The game ultimately relies on being able to bluff, lie, and work together to deduct who is (are) the Werewolf (werewolves). Judgement is then made, and if the Werewolf is killed the Village wins, and if anyone else is killed the Werewolf wins.

I played multiple rounds of the game with five of my friends and I enjoyed it a lot. There is a bit of confusion when first learning, but it is a game that can be easily learned. The biggest struggle we had was trying not to laugh when someone wasn’t able to bluff, but by the last game each of us had developed our own poker faces.
