By Shelby Small–The Betty Ling Tsang Fine Arts Series brings a multitude of theatre performances from a variety of genres to Morningside’s campus at no cost. Between the months of June and August there will be four very different shows presented in the Buhler Outdoor Performance Center for all ages. Director Randy Peters says it’s chance to let people experience the theatre for no cost.
“It’s a gift back to the community, which is part of the reason I love my job. It gives an opportunity for people who can’t afford to go to theater to come here and enjoy an outdoor setting,”said Peters.
Beginning June 10 is The Servant of Two Masters. This show is a comedy that depicts an underpaid jester, who begins to serve two masters at once in order to double his wages. This low-brow comedy includes pop culture references, dancing and juggling and is perfect for all ages.
The end of the month brings an ode to our service men with a performance from the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra in their 100th season. This concert will showcase patriotic music followed by a fireworks display. This event will take place on June 25 in the Buhler Outdoor Performance Center with the rain location being Eppley Auditorium.
July 8th and 9th brings a new telling of The Emperor’s New Clothes. This show entitled Oops is written by Dianna Wooley as a part of the newest production in the LAMB Arts Regional Theatre’s caravan touring shows. This silly show is a must see for all ages with its eccentric characters and comedic plot.
The Taffetas is a new kind of musical spotlighting four sisters performing on a national radio. The women believe that this performance will be their big break and that Ed Sullivan himself will take them to the big times. This musical will consist of numbers such as “I’m Sorry,” “Tammy,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” and “Where the Boys Are.
“With Taffetas we have a jazz combo and if it all works out we’re going to do a vintage car show at the same time so we’re going to make it a real event,” said Peters.
“It’s a great place to introduce the arts to the community which is just what Betty Ling Tsuang is all about,”said Peters. “Betty Ling Tsuang is going to be going year round so we have events planned all year that are all free to the public. It’s just a really awesome way for the performing arts on our campus to shine.”
