As Borders Reopen, New York Wants Foreign Tourists Back, and Fast

This article from the N.Y. Times talks about New York City and the cities’ plans for the return of foreign tourists.

The article mentions how the tourism marketing agency of the city is starting a campaign in some countries to get visitors to come to NYC. It talks about how the city is still trying to revive its economy and for that to happen, a key part is still missing: tourists from foreign countries. These tourists are so important because they usually stay longer and spend more money, compared to American visitors.

In order to lure the tourists back into the city, the tourism agency of the city is planning to spend $6 million. They are starting a campaign called “It’s Time for New York City” in eight different countries.

In my opinion, the topic of the article is pretty newsworthy as it is a perfect example of the aftereffects of the Covid-19 lockdown. The article uses numbers to show the amount of money lost due to the pandemic.  In addition to that, it also uses quotes from a local businessman. The quote clarifies the importance of international tourists and is a good way to end the article.

  1. It’s also a reminder that the NYT is a New York City newspaper.
It has a local audience it needs to inform. Oddly enough, the
ads on the page are for NYCGO.com. How convenient.
