The Art of Self Defense

By Iandra Estupinian–Campus Safety and Security are offering two more free self-defense classes for the spring semester.

Assistant Director of Safety and Security and licensed self-defense instructor, Jerry Meisner, has been teaching defense lessons for the past 20 years. In recent years, Meisner has changed his techniques to teach students simple but effective ways to injure their attacker.

“I teach my students that they should not try to over-power their attacker and I also teach them not to use complex moves,” explained Meisner. “This would not work in a real-life situation.”

The classes involve learning about an attacker’s weaknesses and the proper use of pepper spray or keys against them. The overall goal of the course is to teach students how to injure their attacker enough where they can get away and call for help.

Meisner expresses that he wants both men and women to attend the class and support each other. He wants every student to feel safer when they leave his class than when they first walked in.

“I believe it is very important for EVERY student to learn self-defense,” shared Meisner. “Anyone can be a victim.  Too often people think that nothing bad will ever happen to them and have a false sense of invincibility.”

Jerry Meisner went on to share last year’s news topics about two Iowa girls who were attacked and killed, emphasizing the need to learn self-defense.

When attending the classes, students are encouraged to bring a friend or partner to practice on. It is advised that students should wear comfortable clothing and no jewelry.

The next two classes will be held in the HPER dance room on March 21st and April 9th. Both sessions will begin at 7:15 pm and run for about an hour and a half.
