(3.2.17) By Mitch Kellogg – Both the Morningside baseball and softball teams hit the road this week to warmer destinations for their long awaited spring trips.
Softball
The softball team, which departed early Wednesday morning (March 1), is headed to the Gulf Coast Invitational Tournament held in Gulf Shores, Alabama that will start Friday. The Stangs will play at least three games over three days of the tournament. Those games will be against Lindsey-Wilson, Campbellsville, and Faulkner.
Second Basemen Emillee Dorpinghaus said, “The team is really excited to play down in Alabama. There is going to be a lot of good teams and we are all really excited to play against them.”
From there, the 8-1 Lady Stangs will head back north picking up games in Oklahoma against the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO) and playing in another tournament held in McPherson, Kansas. The McPherson Tournament will be five games played over two days (March 10-11). Those games will be against Bethany, Kansas Wesleyan, Friends, York, and finally, McPherson.
Baseball
The baseball team will hit the road Saturday as they head to the warm shores of Southern California. The team will be travelling around the greater Los Angeles area playing against other NAIA schools.
The Stangs are looking to get back on track with a double-header on Monday against Shepherd College. The Mustang’s will also play a game against Biola, a double-header against Marymount University, and finally a three-game series against #20 Vanguard.
Mustang shortstop Dylan Mersola commented on the trip saying, “ I can’t wait to play in LA, and since I’m from the area, it is going to be sweet playing in front of my friends and family.”
Mersola is one of five players from California on the Mustang roster. Senior pitcher JL Tourville said he is excited to play against the good competition, and also he mentioned that he cannot wait to eat at In-N-Out Burger.
