Iowa Caucus Results: Cruz and a Tie

By Kayla Perkins–After a grueling night of anticipation, anxiety, and counting, the results of the 2016 Iowa Caucus are in. In the Republican Party, Texas Senator Ted Cruz won with 27.6 percent and 8 delegates, surpassing businessman Donald Trump (24.3 percent) and Florida State Senator Marco Rubio (23.1 percent), according to the Associated Press.

In the Democratic Party, however, former United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and United States Senator Bernie Sanders ended the caucus with a virtual tie, Clinton at 49.9 percent and Sanders at 49.6 percent, according to the Associated Press.

One Morningside student, Elizabeth Planck, caucused for Bernie Sanders at the Democratic Caucus.

“It was my first time caucusing, and there was a long wait and [it] kinda boring,” said Planck. This caucus drew some record numbers, a win for both parties.

Not all of those who campaigned were winners. Democratic candidate and former Maryland governor Martin O’Malley suspended his campaign when he failed to gain support from voters, ending the caucus with a meager 0.6 percent.

Republican candidate and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee has also called it quits, succeeding from the race after failing to garner support.
