Palmer Student Research Symposium

IMG_20150415_105359_481By Kayla Samek—Bright and early at 7:30 on Wednesday, April 15th Provost Bill Deeds of Morningside College gave opening remarks for the 33rd annual Maud Adams Nursing Symposium and the 12th annual Palmer Student Research Symposium. The day is dedicated to presentation of original student research from all fields of study. The symposium also featured keynote speaker Dr. Christian Meissner, a professor at Iowa State University, who presented his findings on interrogation tactics and forced confessions.

Despite a considerable drop in the number of presentations, Palmer still grew a large crowd of faculty, staff, and students to hear oral presentations and see the poster sessions.

A poster presenter, Mallory Johnson said “the day (went) really well and there were lots of good questions from students and professors.”

Spectators also saw the day as a success. Professor Alden Stout of the Philosophy department said the “quality of the presentations were very high and I am impressed with the rigor that went into the research.”

Even fellow student Brandi Blunk, a freshman going to her first Palmer Symposium, stated “I like the poster presentations, they’re good.”

Palmer Symposium not only features student presenters but is organized by students as well. The Palmer Symposium Committee is in charge of every detail of the day, from the lunch menu to the judges’ assignments.

Courtney Hoffman, a junior nursing major, is a returning member of the Palmer Planning Committee. “This year went a lot better than last year” Hoffman stated.
