By Hannah Hecht– This Wednesday, October 1st, a record 820 Morningside students will go “Into the Streets” for a day of city-wide community service. The event, organized by Omicron Delta Kappa, the campus upperclassman honor society, will give students the chance to volunteer at 75 different locations in the Sioux City area.
Students will perform a variety of assignments, from cleaning, to painting, to working with elementary students, to organizing library books, to visiting with the elderly. Volunteers will receive their assignments at an 8 a.m. breakfast orientation meeting in Eppley auditorium.
Anna Christensen, ODK co-vice president of Into the Streets, thinks this is one of the more important events that Morningside students organize.
“ODK is the only organization that sets up a campus wide volunteer event day,” says Christensen. “It’s kind of cool that it’s entirely student-run, where a lot of other volunteer events are set up by the faculty and staff.”
Senior Jaimie Fast has participated in the event every year since she has been at Morningside.
“It really goes to show that Morningside places a high value on volunteering in the community,” says Fast. “It’s nice that they give us the day off class, so it’s really easy to make the decision to volunteer.”
Christensen and co-vice president Maria Bohling are coordinating this project with help from a student committee including ODK members Ali Bachman, Tiffany Brasby, Douglas Collins, Mikala Cooper, Tasha Lechtenberg, Nicole Loe, Jenni Theisen, Alyssa Turnquist, and Greg Guelcher.
