By Nik Rasmussen– For starters, I’ve seen a lot of movies, and I mean a lot of movies; I’ve seen many, in fact, that most people are not even aware of. Feeling the need to change up from the movies of today, I was shopping around and stumbled on the classic Alfred Hitchcock thriller The Birds. Though I knew of the film and the general content from seeing quick clips mixed in with others in a calash of classic works, I had never actually seen the movie. Being the film enthusiast that I am, I locked myself in a room with a fresh selection of snacks and turned off the lights and all means to contact the outside world for zero interruption. Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960’s film The Birds had me on edge, captivated from start to finish.
The story starts off as an average day with that 1960’s vibe you would expect. Most often in movies, the first half of the film is getting to know the characters so that you will care about them in danger later. Though The Birds did, in fact, follow this story structure, I found myself almost forgetting that the film was about large amounts of attacking birds. I would have forgotten completely if it were not for the small reminder of strange activity by birds hear and there. Unlike in most films, this was done successfully. Seeing the characters in a “normal” world only reinforced the suspense and the need to know what or why these attacks were happening.
I won’t spoil the ending for you, but I can say after viewing nearly every film that one can recollect, Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds left me in absolute awe. As always, I strongly recommend that if you are watching the film for the first time, cut off communication to the outside world, grab some snacks and a drink, and turn off the lights. Doing this will allow you to fully submerge yourself in the world of film you are about to experiences.
