Black Friday, the most infamous day of retail

By Kevin Green–

Roughly 152 million Americans participated in this year’s Black Friday bonanza. Here in Sioux City, the late-night turnout was just as impressive. Several localbusinesses got into the act this year including Target, Best Buy, as well as the Southern Hills Mall, which opened its doors at midnight for the first time in its 31-year history.

No serious injuries were reported, though frenzied shoppers at Southern Hills Mall did manage to break down two doors at the front entrance during the midnight opening. Likewise, local station KTIV reported an estimated 1,300 customers at The Sunnybrook Plaza Target store.

Several local residents had varying opinions on Black Friday. Mickey Castro thought, “It [Black Friday] is overrated, I’ll take advantage of the online sales instead.”

While Chad Paszternak was going to, “…do Black Friday Bass Pro Style.”

Sophomore Nick Brincks shared his thoughts on the most anticipated shopping day of the year via Facebook writing, “Had my first Black Friday midnight shopping experience and decided it wouldn’t be worth it to sleep before coming into work.”

Many dealt with the enormous crowds and confusion with light-hearted humor, taking the night in stride. Wal-Mart shopper David Grogan cracked a smile when asked about his experience stating, “Going to Wal-Mart after the Black Friday frenzy is like going into a trailer park after a tornado.”

Meanwhile Singing Hills Wal-Mart associate Caleb Regennitter was, “…just glad it’s over.” Adding, “I don’t ever want to work or shop on Black Friday again.”
