Mustang tennis Thursday vs. Briar Cliff

By Jordan Ogren–
Ten meets into the season, the Mustang men’s tennis team is 4-6 with seven meets yet to be played before the GPAC Tournament. However, the Mustangs are 2-1 in the GPAC and have a promising month of tennis ahead of them.

Next on the schedule is intercity rival Briar Cliff. The Chargers are 1-2 on the year with a conference record of 1-1. The matchup is Thursday, April 14, at 4 pm. If the weather does not cooperate, the match will be moved from the Lewis Park courts to the Four Season Health Club.

“They have some good new players and I know the coaches are great, so I’m thinking they might be better than they have been,” freshman Mustang Austin Grundy said.

Morningside pulled out an 8-1 victory when the two teams met last season.

“I’m very familiar with their coach, Justin Junck, who’s a great coach and has been working hard with their team,” said sophomore Reid Rosen, who holds Morningside’s #2 varsity slot.

“Briar Cliff lost to us last year but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be ready. It’ll be a good meet and I’m looking forward to playing at home,” added Rosen.

Morningside head coach Larry Mason stressed how he hopes his players stay loose, but really bring it against conference opponents.

“I want the team to be more consistent during the GPAC portion of the schedule. We need to continue to build a ‘relaxed intensity’ that enables us to play our best,” said Mason.
