By Doreen Mshana – The Morningside Garden Club brought hands-on agriculture, community donation, and fierce student rivalry together last week during its second annual Sweet Corn Eating Contest at the Buhler outdoor theatre.
This summer, AAFS interns planted sweet corn in the Cargill Outdoor Classroom. On September 9 students in AGRI classes 130, 234, and 345 harvested more than 1,200 ears of sweet corn. The corn was shared across the community; half was donated to the Food Bank of Siouxland, one quarter went to the campus Cafeteria and the remaining quarter was reserved for the sweet corn eating contest for the Garden Club’s signature competition.
On Thursday, the Buhler outdoor theatre came alive with loud cheering, upbeat energy, and an incredible crowd of supporters and student athletes.
Competition was fierce across all three divisions:
Women’s Division: Lizzie and Kylie of the cheer team captured first place, followed closely by Alice and Elena from the swimming team in second.
Men’s Division: Cooper Haddix and Logan Stowater of track and field secured first place to earn back to back championships, with Parker and Brody of men’s cross country taking second.
Coed Division: Zach and Taziah representing football and basketball claimed first place, while Melle and Lily earned second.
Victors took home custom banners and campus bragging rights.
The event organizer, Mia Heilman, notes that the growing tradition highlights students’ engagement, teamwork, local produce and Morningside pride.
