The esports program at Morningside has made a big change, with bigger changes yet to come. Dray Virgo has been appointed as the new head coach of Morningside esports. Virgo wants to add to the program and change how the program is viewed by students, staff, and faculty.
Virgo is already hard at work with shifting the program into a cohesive unit. He knows what it will take to shift the program, with his past experience of seven years as a player, four years as a coach/manager, and three years as an esport admin. His short term goal is to upgrade equipment and facilities. He is making sure that not just the program grows but the student athletes grow, as well. Long term goals are to have some of the top teams in the nation. In the past, Morningside had a small handful of top players but in recent times it has been scarce to recruit top players. Virgo is still getting a lay of the land. “It will be a lot of growing but overall looking to have a good final run for our seniors.”
Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, he is learning the differences in not just the environment but what it means to be a part of Morningside. One of the things he enjoys is, “How open everyone is to conversation. I love how I can just walk into an office and everyone is so welcoming, same with students while walking around campus.” He wants everyone on campus to fully support the esports program. He sees how much students and staff want to support the program, but many still either can’t fully grasp what esports is or know that we have esports teams on campus.
