News Comment #10

November 8, 2022

This article from the New York Times talked about how it seems as if the United States has an unusually high number of elections. Most countries have voting every four to five years whereas America holds elections every two years.

I thought this article was well-written! I liked how the author had different sections of the article devoted to reasoning behind why he believes America votes too much.

The lead for the article is, “Americans casting their ballots in tomorrow’s midterm elections might be voting in their 30th or 40th contest in four years. In the same amount of time, a German citizen might vote in six to eight races.”

This lead is decent – it doesn’t specifically say what the article is about though. I think a lead more like “Is the consistency of American’s voting every two years truly beneficial?” or something of that sort.

Overall the article was good. It was well-informed and gave the reader many facts and reasoning behind why the United States votes as often as it does.

I saw this story. The lead you suggest would be more of a news lead. This story is more of a feature.

The problem with American elections is that they never end. As soon as one election is over people start campaigning for the next. Tremendous waste of money.
