News Critique #7

October 13, 2011 | | 1 Comment

This week I found a news story on the Minneapolis Star Tribune website titled “Strollers: Mother of all workouts”. I thought it was very well written in the sense that parts were like a narrative of a story and others were informative- giving the reader the facts. The quotes that were chosen fit very well and allowed the story to flow. They were taken from teachers of the class and also mothers that are taking part in it. I really enjoyed reading the lead and the nut graph. The first sentence was, “The Alphabet Song,” “Ten Little Monkeys” and “Baa Baa Black Sheep” aren’t typical accompaniment for a morning workout, but they’re appropriate when your exercise partner is under age 3.” It really drew in my attention along with the slide show of pictures at the top of the page. This work out session takes place at the Mall of America and is meant for women with young children. It allows them to get together and form a support group. Not only was this a well written and informative story, I also think it was a very good concept as well!

Side note- The story was set up into three different sections. The first section was the main part of the article, the second was titled “more than a walking group” and the third was  “other programs coming up”. This set up allowed the reader to know what was ahead.

Yes, a good story, Sarah. The subheads do help to break it up, but it’s long. I would have made it three different stories, I think. Let people read one story, and if they want more they could use the links.
