News Critique #6

I was curious to see if there was any news in the Sioux City Journal about Morningside College this week. I looked online for some articles and came across one titled “Nine join Morningside College Faculty”. I was curious as to how the article would be written considering nine people to write about in one article is quite a bit. I read through the article and it was set up in a realistic yet boring manner. It began with stating the faculty members names and what department they are a part of. After a paragraph of listing names, the article followed with a short paragraph about each member, which were listed in alphabetical order by last name. This wrapped up the article. There was no concluding paragraph giving an end to the story. I found this boring to read, yet informative because it got the main point across that it was trying to, and that was giving the names of the new faculty and introducing them. The only thing I found missing was something to end the article. It kind of left the reader hanging…

There was no lead to this article. The opening sentence was as follows: “Morningside college has announced nine new faculty members”. Along with a boring and almost non existent lead, the pictures of the faculty on the left hand side look like mug shots! This seemed a little awkward and after looking through the first two I did not want to continue. I was wondering why they used these pictures, besides the simple fact that they were convenient and the only ones they had.

Kind of an old story, Sarah. Back from the beginning of the semester. And it’s actually a press release. When there’s no byline you can be pretty sure it’s PR. And yes,, they were convenient photos. Convenient for the PR office.
