Scavenger Hunt

Conversations about homecoming are occurring quite frequently here on Morningside’s campus. With homecoming week right around the corner, everything from the football game to the MAC activities are what students and faculty are talking about. Walking around campus with Jazmine on this windy day was quite entertaining. We felt as if we were in a wind tunnel, being thrown around campus in search for things and answers. After chasing after loose papers and taming our tangled hair, we were on our way.

I’ve always found scavenger hunts challenging, especially when we are supposed to forget about “stranger danger”. I broke out of my shell today and began asking students, faculty, and any other passers by what they are most excited about for homecoming. Knowing that this question would not be too awkward to ask a complete stranger, I dove in and received answers; some a little boring, others surprising, but I managed to get some talk out of people. After checking my mail, I decided to spur up a conversation with Abby Duin, a work study student at the post office. When asked, “What are you most excited about for homecoming week?” Abby replied, “I’m excited for all of the events put on by MAC, the football game, and Jerry’s Pizza at the Taste of Morningside.” Although she did not seem too enthused to answer my question, she did and I thanked her for her participation in the scavenger hunt. She smiled at me, chuckled, and looked away.

Because I was not too thrilled about that answer, I decided to stop a young man walking down the street who looked like he had some swagger and possibly an attitude. Him and his friend looked eager for a little conversation with a couple of girls, so I proceeded to ask him my scavenger hunt question. The boy’s name was Cole Schwartz and when asked what his favorite part of homecoming was, he answered, “grinding on the girls at the dance.” A little taken back by his answer, I laughed and said, “Okay thanks!” and walked away. Although this encounter was a quick one, I decided it would be funny to leave him wondering why.

My duties were complete and my treasure had been found. After scurrying around campus, Jazmine and I headed back to the library to begin writing about our adventure and hunt for things and answers- which we both managed to find!
