College students, faculty, and members of the Siouxland Community gathered to hear presidential candidate Newt Gingrich speak on Tuesday September 20th. The Yockey room in the Olson Student Center at Morningside College was busy with people eager to hear Gingrich speak. Gingrich entered with his wife as everyone in the audience stood and clapped, as if it were a wedding processional. Newt began by telling a story about his father, and how he got involved in the military reform caucus. After Newt’s opening statements, he opened the floor for questions from the audience. The first question asked was “where is golf on your priority list?” This got a few chuckles out of the audience, but then was followed by an awkward pause. The rest of the event was filled with questions directed at Gingrich, most from the adults and a few from the students.

An applause followed Gingrich’s comment about how he was going to outline a new contract with America in Des Moines on Thursday September 22nd. People seemed pleased with him comment and proceeded to ask questions about topics from abortion to the energy policy. Gingrich was forward with all of his answers, and even caused a few of the audience members to say “Amen!”

The opening and closing statement of Gingrich’s talk were like book ends to his speech. He began by stating, “I do not ask anyone to be for me, I’m asking people to be with me.”

Following the event, Gingrich stood at the front with his wife Callista and allowed for audience members to take pictures. Many adults and students posed with Gingrich, while others stood from afar taking pictures on their iphones.
