The most interesting thing or event this week was definitely the reenactment of a hajj or Muslim pilgrimage. The first step was to purify ourselves. We washed our hands to do so. Then we walked around the Ka’aba seven times or circumambulate (sp?). Then we ran in between the hills 7 times to symbolize Haddar or however you spell her name trying to find water for her child, Ishmael. We were obviously given water. Then we threw ping pong balls at the obelisk. This symbolized the throwing stones at the three pillars there in Mecca. The last step was to repeat the second step with the Ka’aba.
I must admit that if this was a great way to memorize the steps of the Muslim pilgrimage. However, I have a question. What happens if a Muslim did not take part in the pilgrimage? Will he or she go to Hell? Or does it not really matter? I’d like to think it wouldn’t really matter because what if a person can’t go because of lack of money or serious health issues? Hhmmm…
I definitely think I will memorize the steps of the hajj now that we have performed them. I wonder why every rule has to be so strict though. Like why do you have to walk around the Ka’aba seven times, why not just circle it a couple of times? The same thing with the running in between the hills, I feel sorry for any Muslim that is out of shape that wants to fulfill the hajj. I liked throwing the ping pong balls at the statue, it makes sense that throwing the stones would cast the devil out (I think that’s what it was for). I wonder the same thing you do about if someone is not able to perform the hajj. I know they are supposed to go if they can but there are several issues that play a factor in deciding whether an individual will be able to go. In Christianity you have to be saved in order to go to heaven (as we learned in the Unlikely Disciple) but what if someone doesn’t even know about Christianity. What if someone was born in a poor country and they never even learned about what being a Christian was, would they go to hell? This ties in to not being able to perform the hajj, just because someone hasn’t performed it shouldn’t make them go to hell, just like if someone was unaware of Christianity. Maybe we will figure this out as we learn more in this class.
