After reading the book, Unlikely Disciple, I must admit it was an interesting book. For one thing, it’s hard to believe it actually happened. The fact that Kevin Roose, the author, actually went through a semester in Liberty University seems more on par with a TV show dedicated to unearthing the real truth about certain topics. Yet, he did it. In real life. Without a single video camera documenting the whole thing. He had some guts to try and do that while “betraying” his friends.
As for betraying his friends, I don’t think he betrayed his friends. He simply left out the actual reason he was there in the first place. Otherwise, he was still Kevin Roose, minus the cussing and add in the praying. So, I was glad the friends didn’t react in the way that I thought was going to take place. Something like revenge more so than being so forgiving and gracious. Obviously, I was surprised at the turn of events. Anyway, all in all, Unlikely Disciple was a great book. Not much action, but the drama is terrific. The book also, in a way, teaches all of us a lesson in forgiveness and how religion plays a role in all of our lives.
I thought that Unlikely Disciple was also a really interesting book. It was really thought provoking to me because I was raised in a christian school setting from preschool to eighth grade. Maybe I should have written a book when I left eighth grade and went to a public high school, I could have been just another version of Kevin Roose. haha. I could see similarities that Liberty and my elementary and middle school shared. No Jerry Falwell at my school though. It wasn’t as conservative as Liberty was, but we had Bible class, wore uniforms, and guys hair couldn’t be touching their collars or eyebrows. We also always had to have our shirt tucked in and I found the part of Kevin going to minister to people on spring break really awkward. The Kurt Cameron approach to ministering to people and asking them if they’re good people was something I remember sitting in Bible class and watching videos of him doing. For me, the book really puzzled me just because I was brought up in a similar way to some of those Liberty kids so I found myself constantly questioning myself through out the whole book. Like asking myself, “well what would I do in that situation?” I agree that it shows a good example of how people should forgive one another, because for the Liberty students they are modeling themselves after Christ and so they should forgive Kevin because that is the Liberty way.
