Lead Practice #1 – Radar Guns to be Removed from use in the Iowa Highway Patrol

Posted at 11:01 am under Uncategorized

70 radar guns to be removed from service in the Iowa Highway Patrol to avoid risks of cancer, spokesman Smith says. Studies are being conducted to find any links between cancer and the radar guns.

In a press conference yesterday, Adam Smith, a spokesman for the Iowa Highway Patrol, stated that the Patrol wants to “err on the side of caution until more is known about the issue.” This ban comes two months after three officers in Cedar Rapids claimed they developed cancer from using the radar guns. The Iowa Highway Patrol says the move is a precaution until more is known about the link between cancer and radar guns.

While 70 guns are being taken out of service, troopers will still use radar unit transmitters mounted on the outside of their vehicles. This move is considered to be the first of its kind by a state police agency.
