Sensual Descriptors – Food

James Harden Sour Beard Gummies

The Gummy smells extremely sour, squishes like a piece of foam. It is both red and blue split right down the middle of the gummy. Design is supposed to resemble James Harden but just seems to be like a regular piece of gummy. The dual fruity tastes mix well with the sour coating. The combination of fruit doesn’t specify any one fruit as they just melt together well. The gummy feels to melt in my mouth without chewing. A chew brings a squishy sense to my mouth. All in all a good taste experience.

Chocolate Twinkie

The opening of the wrapper brings the suspense of the taste ahead. It also comes with a chocolate smell from the cake. I can already see the filling start to ooze out of their filling holes from the underside of the twinkie. The Twinkie feels very squishy almost like a sponge which is a good descriptor to the sponge cake covering. The chocolate and inside filling mix very well together to create a desirable tasting experience. You could note the audible “mmmmm” from my mouth as I gave it a taste. Overall a very great tasting experience.

News Comment #6 – Rachel Mitchell, a Veteran Sex Crimes Prosecutor, Faces National Glare in Kavanaugh Case

This article plays to a bunch of different news values, one of the main ones being relevance. This for a while can be one of the evergreen stories we mentioned in class that for a while will be important to talk about. That time period is until the hearings are completed. Until that comes this story and topic is pretty evergreen.

Another news value that comes into play is the idea of prominence. Any Supreme Court Justice, current or future, is prominent in American society. Many people might not be able to name two justices but they are prominent and very important to every day life.

I thought the lead was good, bringing in a story from the previous career of Mitchell. Also showing how, in a few cases throughout history, the system may have been stacked against the women in these kinds of scenarios. The lead definitely kept me reading the rest of the story however.

Scavenger Hunt – Stranger Danger

Today I had the great pleasure of going out and about on Morningside’s campus and talking to random people that I encountered. I first went to Buehler Rohlfs Hall to bother anybody sitting around studying for their various assignments and tests.

I ran into Jeremiah Horack a freshman from Nebraska who was working on an assignment for one of his classes. I asked him first about a restaurant recommendation for Sioux City. He responded by saying that he had been living in Sioux City for only 4 weeks and was not able to give a good recommendation. I then asked him for a restaurant recommendation from his hometown in Nebraska, he recommended The International Food Truck from his home town.

My next task was to go up to two strangers and get a picture of them, I walked up to two seniors in the Student Center who were waiting in line for lunch. Jeff Bartels and Rafael Lask, two seniors at Morningside were waiting in line when I snapped this picture from their waiting process in the Student Center. They seemed to be very indifferent about posing for a picture.

News Comment #5 – Touring Storm Damage in the Carolinas, Trump Follows His Own Script

This article leads the reader in to not only the situation very well, but also the mind of the President. The article tries to take a look at how the President views the situation going on with the storm in the Carolinas. It shows how he is viewing the situation and that is a very cool insight that is pretty valuable to a news article to give it a different taste.

One of the obvious news values that takes place in this story is the value of prominence. Donald Trump as President is a very prominent figure making news in lieu of a horrible storm that has changed people’s lives. Him showing up anywhere like that is news, let alone his actions once he shows up at a certain area. Him being the President and the way he handles himself once he gets to an area of rebuilding makes the news anytime.

Another news value this falls under is the value of relevance and currency. With the storm just taking place it falls into this news value because of the fact of how devastating the storm was for many people. As shown in the picture and writing a boat was in the back of this man’s house and that shows in and of itself how devastating a storm like this is.

The National Transportation Safety Board immediately sent a team to investigate the plane crash in Townsville.

News Comment #4 – N.R.A. Show Puts Thomas the Tank Engine in K.K.K. Hood to Criticize Diversity Move

This article has a great lead and headline that made me as a reader want to keep reading. Anything that brings the KKK and a children’s show together in a news story is worth a read. Excellent job by the writer to draw audiences in with both a great lead and a great headline.

One of the few news values this article talks about is the news value of conflict. Many different conflicts are being represented in this article such as conflict between NRATV and Mattel, the images and Mattel, and NRATV against the idea of political correctness pandering to audiences. There are many different forms of conflict that make this article stand out when it comes to wanting to read it.

Another news value this story brings up is the news value, bizarre. This story is bizarre because as I mentioned, the story mentions the KKK and Thomas the Tank Engine. Whenever two polarizing things get brought together like that it is sure to seem very bizarre to any reader.

Overall I think this was a well written news article and one that drew my attention right from the get-go. A good lead, interesting story, and a bizarre story-line kept me reading this story all the way through.

Lead Practice #1 – Radar Guns to be Removed from use in the Iowa Highway Patrol

70 radar guns to be removed from service in the Iowa Highway Patrol to avoid risks of cancer, spokesman Smith says. Studies are being conducted to find any links between cancer and the radar guns.

In a press conference yesterday, Adam Smith, a spokesman for the Iowa Highway Patrol, stated that the Patrol wants to “err on the side of caution until more is known about the issue.” This ban comes two months after three officers in Cedar Rapids claimed they developed cancer from using the radar guns. The Iowa Highway Patrol says the move is a precaution until more is known about the link between cancer and radar guns.

While 70 guns are being taken out of service, troopers will still use radar unit transmitters mounted on the outside of their vehicles. This move is considered to be the first of its kind by a state police agency.

News Comment #3 – Nike Returns to Familiar Strategy With Kaepernick Ad Campaign

This article has a very good example of an eye-catching lead. From the first sentence or two I wanted to keep reading to know where the writer was going through. It leads you into something that catches your eye, and in this story that means controversial athletes and stances. The writer does a good job of drawing in the reader’s attention with the statement about Nike and controversial athletes.

This story fits under two main news values. The first news value they mention is prominence. This fits under this news value because of the prominence Colin Kaepernick has due to not only his NFL career, but also because of his voice that he has been using to speak against an idea he believes in. Whenever a celebrity/athlete of his stature does anything, especially in conjunction with a big brand such as Nike.

The other news value this shows is conflict for many different reasons. The many conflicts of this story make it perfect for news and media outlets. One of the conflicts that lie in this story is the conflict between Nike and its consumers. Consumers who don’t believe in Kaepernick’s protest are threatening a boycott of Nike. Another area of conflict in this story is the conflict between the NFL and Colin Kaepernick. Colin has been in a collusion case with the NFL because of his idea that the NFL has been colluding to keep him out of the league. Another final conflict is between the NFL and Nike. This conflict exists due to the NFL and Nike having contracts to keep Nike as the official uniform of the NFL. With the NFL having the fight with Kaepernick, this could lead to an interesting development with the NFL and Nike should anything become of the Colin Kaepernick collusion case.
