Mega City Mall Disaster

At 9:50AM this morning an explosion occurred at the Mega City Mall food cafeteria.

Initial injury numbers from the explosion were less than 100 but with 2 fatalities. St. Mercy and Jean-Luc hospitals hold several individuals with fire and smoke inhalation along with minor injuries.

Madison Hartman, a mall custodian injured at the scene, said as she picked up her mop she heard a “ka boom” out of nowhere and a chair flew and hit her in the collar bone.

Mall Security said that a Briar Cliff student named Nik was the mastermind behind this Mega Mall disaster. He brought donuts into the mall and gave one to another man in the food court and it exploded in his mouth. Mall security mentioned that “Nik was the mastermind behind it all.”

One 12 year old child that lost her dad was in the food court getting Taco Bell when the explosion happened. She then fled the mall, along with many others, still not having any idea where her dad could be.

No other details have been released about the explosion at this time.

Youtube star Olivia Jade college admissions scandal (news comment 16)

Olivia Jade and mother Lori Loughlin

Olivia Jade, a youtube star, was involved in a college admissions scandal approximately 8 months ago with her parents, actress Lori Loughlin and designer Mossimo Giannulli.

Her parents were arrested in March for their involvement in a college admissions scandal at University of Southern California, where they paid $500,000 to get both of their daughters into college.

The parents labeled them as recruits to the USC crew team so they could get into the school, neither have ever participated in a sport.

Olivia’s parents were charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services fraud – pled not guilty.

Youtube star has not decide whether or not to go back to school or get involved with any education quite yet.

Sources about Olivia say: “She feels she hasn’t been a part of any wrongdoing and feels tricked by her parents into going to a school that wasn’t even her top choice. Right now she wants to prove she can do it on her own, and she thinks going back to school will help renew her image.”

This news article was very interesting. Maybe because I have heard of her and have watched some of her videos, but it probably is not that interesting for men and people who have never seen any of her videos. But it could be interesting for the people who like fraud cases like the one her parents were involved in. So, this article could be for a variety of people. They are a well known family so that is how it could be newsworthy.

“A destroyed knee doesn’t mean you’re a destroyed person” draft 1

The stress and anxiety of preparing for finals and pursuing those straight A’s is as much a part of the “college experience” as watching college football is. With all of these negatives, a freshman at Morningside College named Zed Heimensen added the biggest negative of them all to the pile, one that would change everything.

He is a 19-year-old Morningside College freshman from Rock Rapids, IA, who from the start “always had a football in his arms” paired with the dream to play college football. This would eventually come true, but little did he know, one tackle in his 3nd college football game would ruin those dreams forever.

This brown haired, bad haircut guy stands tall at 6’2 and always has a smile on his face. When he is not hanging out in the training room or on the football field, he is in his dingy dorm studying – as he would say a “STUDENT athlete”.

While speaking to Zed in his dingy dorm room of his college residence hall, wearing his “usual” Nike sweatpants and Morningside football sweatshirt, he told me about how he is making this negative – a positive.

In his 3rd college football game, they headed an 1 hour 24 minutes to Midland University.

With 1 touchdown and several catches on the game, the game was about to end. With 10 minutes left, Zed jumped up to catch a pass and on the way down he hyperextended his knee. Then with his knee in a vulnerable position, he was hit by the defender.

A torn ACL, LCL, lateral hamstring, and a partial PCL tear later… his football dreams were over.

“It could always be worse” are his famous words. Throughout this crazy process, he learned to “not take things for granted, because not being able to walk for 8 weeks on your own puts things into perspective.”

Not ever having surgery before he was just trying to stay hopeful and hope for the best. Since surgery he has continued to stay positive working through rehab and life in general.

While trying to hold back tears, Zed said his advice to other athletes is to “not take anything for granted because you never know when your last play will happen.”

His ending words as I walked out the door were “a destroyed knee doesn’t mean you’re a destroyed person.”

Jenner Sells $600 Million Stake In Makeup Line (news comment 15)

Image result for kylie jenner cosmetics"

Billionaire, Kylie Jenner sells part of her $1.2 billion dollar company to Coty Inc., a fragrance and cosmetics company, to hopefully “reach more fans all over the world.”

Coty said Monday that they would pay $600 million for a 51% stake in Kylie Cosmetics and launch more products under her line all over the world.

Jenner will still be the face of the brand, as that will not change even though Coty owns part of it.

This news article has everyone talking. Right when I heard about this, I wanted more information on it, and this source had everything I needed to know. The headline basically had everything. This is newsworthy because Kylie Jenner is a name everyone any age is familiar about. Her company is huge and it was so weird to hear she sold half of it. So, that is why this is newsworthy. Short article, but straight to the point.

Mad-Dog

The last conversation I had was with Madison Hartman. She wore charcoal color leggings along with grey Nike tennis shoes and a black sweater with her navy North Face winter coat. Her long brown/blonde hair was in a pony tail and she wore clear glasses over her big brown eyes. Last but certainly not least she was carrying her light grey and purple North Face backpack.

As soon as Hartman and I walked out of Advertising Class we talked about the presentations we just had and how “the winner got 10 extra credit points.” Additionally, the conversation of volleyball practice came up and we questioned if we would “continue the games we played yesterday?”.

We ended the conversation with volleyball practice and walked into our next class.

Whether you like Marvel or a die-hard throwback Disney fan, this is for you.

This news article has everyone talking. I wanted to check it out and see what this new streaming service was all about. This article I read had every source of information that I needed to know in order to get every detail about it. The headline ‘Disney Plus: Everything you need to know about Disney’s new ad-free streaming service’ caught my attention because that was exactly what I wanted to know. This is newsworthy because it is something new for everyone that everyone wants to know about. I feel like when a company comes out with a new product or in this case a streaming service, everyone wants to know what it is about because streaming services are beginning to take over. This article was sufficient enough for me and I assume lots of other people that just want to know what it is about, therefore it was not missing anything.

Niklas Gustav on a mission for sacks

Meet Niklas Gustav, born and raised in Hamburg, Germany with the desire to play college football in the United States.

Excitement and nerves overcame Nik during his flight to the United States as he was anxious to begin his new football journey.

Nik never really has felt home sick because he has his brother in the United States as well, which plays football at Colorado University.

From the very beginning, the Morningside football team was “very welcoming”, says Nik.

Niklas Gustav is a defensive end which is the first line of defense, with the simple job to “stop the run and try to get the quarterback.” He has 4 sacks this year along with 15 total sacks in his career, which is #10 in Morningside History for sacks.

There are 2 more regular season games to go; home vs. Concordia and away at Northwestern College.

The next step after regular season are the playoffs, and maybe another national title.

article 3 script & mp3

tonight we are going to be focusing more on recent so called “trends” that have been effecting young teens and college kids

Story 1

Did you know blue light exposer from things such as your phone affect aging, brain cells and retinas?

Long period exposer to blue light, such as that which radiates from computer screens and cell phones, could affect the aging process. New studies show that blue light damages brain cells and retinas.

Here is what a college student had to say about blue light – quote

One study done included flies; and how they were affected after 12-hour daily blue light exposer.

The flies that were exposed to 12 hours in blue light and 12 hours in darkness had shorter lives than the flies that were kept in total darkness and light with no blue light wavelengths. Flies that were exposed to that blue light showed damage to retinal and brain cells.

Eyeglasses with blue light blocking lenses, and phones, laptops, and other devices can be set to block blue emissions to help prevent aging, and damage to brain cells and retinas.

Story 2

It is nearing the end of 2019, and a constant trend we’ve seen throughout this year is juuling. Many teenagers that juul think that it is a healthier alternative compared to cigarettes. Doctors are now giving tips for students who are struggling to quit juuling. Here’s what some have to say.

Dr. Jaspers, director of the Center for Environmental Medicine, said a Juul is not any less harmful than conventional cigarettes.

She says, “I think they just don’t understand how much nicotine is in these devices,” “They have no idea that there is probably three times as much nicotine in a Juul as there is in a cigarette.”

approximately two-thirds of Juul users between the ages of 15 and 24 do not know that Juul always contains nicotine.

Here is what a student from morningside college had to say about juuling-  quote

one of the most important first steps for kids to stop juuling is for users to identify the triggers that prompt them to use their Juul.

identify alternative stress relievers to avoid relying on an electronic cigarette.

There are also apps designed to help people modify their behaviors. the Truth Initiative, recently launched an app that could help college students looking to stop using these products

After all, you really have no idea what juuling can do to you and your body in 20-30 years.

Story 3

Speaking of trends, another what seems to be college trend is maintaining that year-round glow- or in other words- tanning beds.

A New York lawmaker wants to make the age to use tanning beds 21 and up

In the state of New York, minors as young as 17 years old are allowed to tan indoors with written consent from guardians.

According to stats from the American skin care foundation, more than 419,000 cases of skin cancer in the US are linked to indoor tanning.

People who first use a tanning bed before age 35 increase their risk for melanoma by 75%.

Quote

“It is time to raise the minimum age to use indoor tanning beds in order to keep the next generation of New Yorkers safe from these cancer-causing products,” wrote the senator of New York regarding this issue

Rather than tanning beds, there are healthier alternatives like tanning body oils, lotions, or spray tans that give you the same exact tan without the UV radiation.

Whether it be harmful blue light rays, juuling, or a frequent tanning bed user, each of these so called “trends” has a harmful impact. There are many other healthier alternatives to each of these trends mentioned here tonight.

Pregnant woman shot and killed intruders that invaded her home (news comment 12)

A pregnant Florida woman shot and killed a man with an AR-15 who invaded her home last Wednesday night.

The two men “made demands” of the man and woman who lived there and then started beating the male homeowner.

The female homeowner then retrieved a firearm, which was in the house legally, and fired a bullet which hit one of the men attacking her husband.

“He made it from my back door to roughly 200 feet out in the front ditch before the AR did its thing.”

Officials say, the search for the second intruder continues.

This story caught my attention because of the headline. A pregnant woman shot someone. That catches my attention and I assume many others. This not only is newsworthy because of that, but also because it is something the whole neighborhood needs to be aware of. An intruder is on the loose and has not been found. The audience for this article can basically be anyone, especially people that live in that same area. Personally, I do not think this article has anything missing from it. It explains that They are both alive, she shot 1 intruder, and the other has not been found yet.

Fires on fires on fires

200 acres of homes and land continue to burn in San Bernardino now into Jurupa Valley. Will it ever stop?

Another fire erupted early Thursday at about 1:40 a.m. by Highway 18 at Lower Waterman Canyon, spreading into neighborhoods like where Lebron James lived.

Fire officials ordered mandatory evacuations in approximately 490 homes (1,300 residents). And 450 firefighters and helicopters are hovering and circling areas to protect and control the fires.

“The wind has been the biggest factor in the fire spread,” said the chief firefighter.

This article obviously is newsworthy. These non-stop California fires effect everyone in the United States. The audience for this article is basically everyone that cares about the country they live in. There has been so many fires going on in California that people care and want to know about it. The lead is affective in any way because people will want to read about it no matter what it says if it deals with the constant fires going on.
