Make it Lead

John Boyega: ‘I’m the only cast member whose experience of Star Wars was based on their race’

What makes the lead attention grabbing is mentioning John Boyega being stranded in the sea near Nigeria. It is a fact I did not know about Boyega or his career and I was curious about how did that happened.

If the lead leaned on Boyega’s experience with being a part of Star Wars, it wouldn’t be as intriguing due to it being the same lead as many other articles. I think due to it taking a different beat than what is known makes readers curious. Plus, it tells a different tale about what has shaped Boyega besides his part in the Star Wars cast.

  1. The boatman cut the engine and began demanding for cash from his passenger in order to make it to the final destination. John Boyega was caught in a moment, stranded in a boat in Nigeria, that would define his responses to challenges in life.
  2. If John Boyega wanted to return to shore, he needed cash. Fast.
  3. Life sometimes places you between a rock and a hard place. For John Boyega, it was a stalled boat in Nigeria and the demand to hand over money.

I like the anecdote at the beginning, but it’s not well told. I’m not sure why the ear plug thing is necessary. Just get him in the boat. Why he’s there isn’t all that critical. Your first option might work best.

Jimi needs to explain less in shorter paragraphs.
