Newt Gingrich visits Morningside

By Claire De Roin–
Presidential candidate and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich spoke to a crowd of over a hundred people Tuesday September 20th at Morningside College.

The Yockey Room was full of mostly older Caucasians when Gingrich strolled in ten minutes late.

Gingrich opened with a briefing on his candidacy. “Next Thursday in Des Moines, I will reveal my new contract with America,” he said. Gingrich plans to revamp America for the 21st century. He revealed a four-step plan: cutting taxes, cutting regulations, developing energy, and praising the people who make it happen.

This town hall meeting turned into a Democrat bashing session quickly as Gingrich called President Obama a “spoiled brat,” and asked several times of the president, “What is he thinking?” He went so far as to say that the re-election of President Obama would result in more families on food stamps. “Do you want food stamps or pay checks?” Gingrich asked, implying that he would bring paychecks to more families. In addition, Gingrich regularly reminded the audience of his relationship with Ronald Reagan.

The audience broke in with applause a few times, and cries of “amen!” could be heard over the clapping.

Gingrich continued to put words in Democrats’ mouths. “Democrats hate the rich, hate the productive.” He then compared Democrats to alcoholics.

Gingrich opened the floor to the public for questions for an hour. He left the crowd with this: “I’m not asking you to be for me. I’m asking people to be with me. We have a long eight years of hard work ahead of us.”
