(2.16.17) By Blake Meacham – The No. 8 Morningside women’s basketball team held off a stingy Briar Cliff Charger team for an 84-72 victory on Morningside’s campus Wednesday night. The Mustang’s defense shined on this night, holding the Chargers to an icy 37 percent shooting performance. They also dominated the rebounding battle, posting a 52-34 advantage for the game.
The Mustangs held a 60-40 lead during the third quarter and were on the verge of turning the game into a blowout before the Chargers went on a couple of big scoring runs. With about five minutes left in the game, the Mustangs held a 71-64 lead before they eventually pushed their lead back into double digits and never looked back.
Lauren Lehmkuhl was the team leader in points and rebounds, with 21 and 15, respectively. Her double-double was her fourth in a row and her ninth this season. Madison Braun recorded 19 points on the night, and Lexi Ackerman tallied 14 points for the Mustang ladies.
The Mustangs, who are currently third in the GPAC standings, finish off their regular season with a game against Midland, who is currently 8th in the standings. The Mustang women are currently preparing for the postseason, where they are seemingly regulars in the national tournament under head coach Jamie Sale. The players believe they’re playing solid basketball right now.
“Coach really stresses about… playing hard and playing together, which really creates good, fast paced basketball. The result has been having fun and winning. Our biggest key moving forward is taking care of our bodies, focusing when we get in practice and paying attention to our scouting reports,” said Lehmkuhl.
The Mustangs play Midland in Fremont, Nebraska, at 2 pm on February 18th.
