(1.27.17)–After pounding conference rivals Concordia and Mount Marty last week, the red-hot Mustang men’s basketball squad was set to take on Dakota Wesleyan, one of the best teams in the country. However, Dakota Wesleyan could barely miss, and Morningside couldn’t find an offensive groove, resulting in a 101-72 lopsided loss.
“It started with the starting five. We came out flat and lacked energy, and it was an uphill battle for the rest of the game,” said Ryan Tegtmeier, a senior guard.
Dakota Wesleyan shot 67 percent in the first half, where they pulled away for a 55-31 lead at halftime. Compared to Morningside’s overall 36.5 pefcent over the course of the game, the Mustangs struggled to string together consecutive scoring possessions.
“They were definitely hot, but our defensive energy early in the game made them that way,” continued Tegtmeier.
Matt Hahn and Bryce Koch lead the scoring effort for the Mustangs with 14 points each. Tegtmeier finished with 13, and Tyler Borchers finished with 11.
The Mustangs travel to Orange City next Wednesday to take on the 13th ranked Northwestern College Raiders at 8 pm.
“Northwestern will be a tough game, obviously. We have to compete harder than we did tonight to steal a win on the road,” said Tegtmeier of the next conference game.
Morningside is 6-6 in conference and 16-7 overall.
