By Kayla Samek—Students on Morningside Campus are often required to conduct original research—whether in the sciences or not—for their classes. The Palmer Research Symposium gives students the chance to present their research in front of peers and a panel of judges. This year, Palmer Symposium is on Wednesday, April 15th, and the deadline for submissions is Friday, March 20th. Students need to write an abstract and have a faculty sponsor in order to be considered. Unlike previous years, however, not all submissions for Palmer will be accepted.
The committee for Palmer Symposium wanted to make the event more prestigious than it has been in the past, only taking the best research submitted. This makes the event look better on a resume, which is the main incentive for presenting at Palmer. Students need not to submit to Palmer to boost their resume. The event also needs volunteers to watch clocks, to make sure presentation do not run over time limits, to help spectators find various presentations, and other jobs as well. The judging panels are selected from college faculty and staff. Morningside students and faculty get the day off from classes, so using the day to boost one’s resume as a student is a day not wasted.
