You don’t have to try so hard
You don’t have to give it all away
You just have to get up, get up, get up, get up
You don’t have to change a single thing
That is only part of the chorus of a new song by Colbie Caillat. I came across this song while on a road trip with my friend and her sister a few weeks ago and I haven’t been able to stop listening to it since. The meaning behind the lyrics, the message, is so powerful that you can’t help but take notice.
Put your make up on
Get your nails done
Curl your hair
Run the extra mile
Keep it slim
So they like you. Do they like you?
With all of the media attention being focused on the “perfect figure” and “perfect make-up” women today are spending way too much time and money on things that they think they need to have to look pretty when in reality, just being you is all you need.
Wait a second,
Why should you care, what they think of you
When you’re all alone, by yourself
Do you like you? Do you like you?
Caillat was inspired to write the song when she was talking to fellow songwriters about the challenges she’s faced in the industry. What is her message within the lyrics? You don’t have to try to be someone else; you just have to be YOU. I think that is pretty inspiring.
Take a listen to the song. Take a close look at her video for “Try” which features women of all different walks of life, taking off their make-up and just being themselves.
Take your make up off
Let your hair down
Take a breath
Look into the mirror, at yourself
Don’t you like you?
Cause I like you
