By Jordan Truckenmiller–After a week of petitioning, campaigning, and voting, students elected the 2014 Student Government Officers. Newly elected officers are President Jack O’Brien, VP Spencer Eiseman, Treasurer Ryan Martinez, Secretary Paige McKern, Student Advocate Paul Johnson, and Director of Communications Lynsay Haverland.
Four of the six officers were either re-elected or changed positions. McKern and Haverland are the two new officers.
Jack O’Brien was formerly Student Advocate, but now has many new ideas he would like to see through as President. He would like to build a more transparent Student Government, and send out bi-weekly podcasts to students, who are encouraged to respond through social media, or by coming in to the Student Government office.
O’Brien is also starting a new organization for students transferring to Morningside. “I want Student Government to be about service and community,” says Jack. He will stress connections with students, and getting more feedback.
Paul Johnson was formerly Secretary but has moved to Student Advocate. Johnson wanted to move because he thought his personality and talents fit the Student Advocate position better. Johnson would like to create a better link between Students and the college itself. He is also hoping to serve as a middle man between students and the college to get the issues they are concerned about heard.
O’Brien says these officers have a lot of experience, with all of them being senators in the past, and many of them being officers before. The new officers will be installed at the Honors Convocation on April 2, and will take office officially on the last meeting of the year.
