Saxophonist Craig Treinen, who has played with John Denver and The Temptations, and bassist Jerry DeVore, who has played with Wynton Marsalis and Gladys Knight, will perform during the Morningside College Jazz Festival, Feb. 6-8 at Eppley Auditorium at Morningside College.
In the 1990s, Treinen performed in the U.S. Air Force Strategic Air Command Band, currently the Heartland of America Band, in Omaha, Neb. He was principal alto saxophonist in the concert band and served as the musical director, staff arranger and lead alto saxophonist with The Noteables jazz band. He is on the faculty at Washburn University in Topeka, Kan.
DeVore has played in three symphonic orchestras and toured for over four years with the U.S. Air Force Heartland of America Band’s concert band and The Noteables. He also has performed with The Confidentials, which was named by Brides Magazine as one of the top wedding bands in the nation.
During the day Thursday, Friday and Saturday, nearly 30 jazz bands from high schools in Iowa, South Dakota and Nebraska will each perform a 20-minute set and participate in a clinic with Treinen or DeVore. These sessions are free and open to the public.
Treinen and DeVore will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 8 with the Morningside Jazz Ensemble and Faculty Jazz Combo in Eppley. General admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students and free for children ages 12 and under.
