10 things freshmen need to know

RoboHeadStudents in Dave Madsen’s First Year Seminar class read the essay “The Freshman Year Thrill Ride,” written by Missy Loney and Julie Feist. In the essay, the authors shared their experiences of their first year at college.

The students then came up with their own list of “Ten Things A Freshman Should Know When Coming to Morningside College”:

  1. Spending $20 now seems like spending $200.
  2. Timing is everything when eating at the Caf.
  3. Stay motivated when times get rough.
  4. Comfort: sweat pants, shorts, t-shirts, crew neck sweaters will make your days a lot better.
  5. One alarm is never enough.
  6. ALWAYS have your student ID on you. The only time you don’t have it, is when you’ll need it.
  7. Show up to class. You don’t pay money to sleep all day.
  8. Procrastination is dangerous. Very dangerous. More dangerous than it was in high school.
  9. No one in college cares “who you were” in high school.
  10. Find time to relax. Don’t overdo it. Naps become a part of your everyday schedule.
