By Cassie Burnside–Last weekend, the Morningside College Track and Field team sent four athletes to compete at the NCAA Division 1 Husker invite in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Breanna Mathes, Taylor Chapman, Monte Larsen, and Neeia Cooperwood all competed.
One of the performances that stood out was from Mathes. The senior from Cherokee, IA competed in the 800 meter run, finishing with a time of
2:12.64. She did not run in the seeded heat, but her time was faster than 4 of the 9 Division 1 runners in the seeded heat.
While Mathes was competing in Lincoln, the rest of the team was in Storm Lake at the Buena Vista track meet. This good news spread like wildfire.
Senior Tabitha Shepherd said, “When I was racing, I thought about how Bre worked hard and ran a 2:12. If she could do it, we all could push through our races.”
The Mustangs compete in their last regular season indoor meet this weekend in Sioux Center at Dordt College.
