Mustangs Sweep Warriors in Season Finale

By Andrew Schnebel ~ Only the top eight teams make softball’s post-season tournament and the Mustangs were on edge of being in or out. Morningside came into Monday night’s finale having to sweep the Midland Warriors or else their season would end.

The Mustangs took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a single by Mackenzie Neely, which drove in two runs. It was a back and forth game but the Mustangs held off the Warriors to get the game one victory. Jordan Johnson got the win. She pitched a complete game earning her 10th win in her past 12 starts.

The Mustangs still needed the second game in order to continue their season. Emma Remy came out strong giving the Mustangs an outstanding pitching performance. She went all seven innings just allowing three hits and one run.

Then with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, sophomore first baseman Kati Steffen stepped up to the plate and blasted a walk off homer over the left field fence to keep the Mustangs season alive. The final score was 2-1.

This weekend the conference tournament gets started in Hastings, Nebraska. The Mustangs will need to be in the top two to make it back to Gulf Shores, Alabama for the National tournament.
