Mustangs Sweep Waldorf in Conference Opener

by Alexis Spier–Jona Fischer, senior midfielder, scored both of Morningside’s goals in a 2-0 win over the Waldorf University Warriors in their first game of the Great Plains Athletic Conference Wednesday, Sept. 13.

Morningside dominated the game having 31 shots on goal with 16 being on goal. Fischer led the team offensively with three of four shots on goal. His first goal was in the 13th minute, and he secured a Mustang win with a final goal in the 84th minute. Fischer was assisted by Fabian Andersson and Tassilo Koerner. 

Defensively, the Mustangs allowed only 5 shot attempts. Goalkeeper Timon Koerber had a quiet game with three total saves. The goalkeeper for Waldorf, Charlie Austin-Ross, had nine saves. 

The Mustangs are 1-0 in the conference and 2-2-3 overall. Four of the seven goals for the Mustangs were scored by Fischer who is the leading scorer on the season. 

The Women’s team came back to beat the Warriors 3-1 after trailing 0-1 early in the game. 

Waldorf’s Gabby Bauman scored the only goal in the first half, putting the Warriors ahead early. The Warriors were fortunate to capitalize on the opportunity considering the team only had two total shots on goal. 

The Mustangs were incredible offensively with 40 total shots and half of them on goal. Roselynn Bosman scored the first goal for Morningside in the 53rd minute. Sina Feeser scored the second goal in the 75th minute, and Keyera Harmon scored the final goal of the match. Harmon led the team offensively with 8 total shots with six of them on goal. She leads the team with four goals on the season.  

The Women’s Morningside soccer team has an overall record of 4-1-1, and are 1-0 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.
