Golfers Have Just One Goal

by Chloe Krommendyk–As the Mustangs near the end of their golf season they are looking forward to one thing: Nationals.

Both the men’s and women’s teams recently won the GPAC conference tournaments. The men won the GPAC at the Dakota Dunes Golf Course by 46 strokes. Seniors Jonny Douglas and Corey Matthey took the first two spots in the tournament. Douglas shot an impressive 290, while Matthey came in with a 292.

The talk of the tournament, however, was sophomore Jackson Sitzmann, who had an impressive hole–in–one on number 4, putting him at 5th place on the leaderboard.

The Mustang men are now ranked number 15 in the NAIA and Senior Corey Matthey is ranked number 45 out of all golfers nationally. The Men’s National tournament will be held at TPC Deere Run Golf Course in Silvis, Illinois on May 18-21.

The GPAC tournament also went well for the women as they took on Bent Tree Golf Club in Council Bluffs. Senior Sam Knight captured her second first place medal in a GPAC tournament, shooting a 305. Only four strokes behind Knight was fellow senior Maria Zorilla, shooting a 305. In third place was Junior Laia Badosa. Freshman Sofia Castelan took sixth, and junior Maria Nava placed eighth.

Knight said, “Nationals is like my one–track mind right now, especially because it is my last competitive meet.” Knight, along with the rest of the women’s team, is excited to take another trip to the National tournament.

The Mustang women are now ranked ninth going into the National tournament. Junior Laia Badosa is ranked 22nd nationally, and close behind her is Sam Knight in 36th, and Sofia Castelan in 45th. The women’s tournament will take place in Rose Creek Golf Course in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on May 25-28.
