Softball ranked 14, 11-1 in GPAC

by Hailey Barrus–The Morningside softball team is currently ranked 14th in NAIA rankings for this season, and has an exceptional record of 33-4, and are 11-1 in the GPAC.

When asked what she hopes her players get out of this season she said, “Our goal this season is to relax, have fun, and most importantly just go out onto the diamond and play.” 

The Mustangs bats have been in full force this season, and a huge contributor to their success. Junior, Morgan Nixon is currently leading the Mustangs in batting average, as well as slugging and homeruns sitting at 13 currently. Senior, Lexie Stolen, has also been a contributor at the plate this year trailing Nixon’s home runs by one with 12. 

Coach Jessica Jones-Stitzman said the team is as strong defensively as they are offensively. The seasoned coach could not be more on the ball. The Mustangs currently have a rotation of 3 pitchers that they utilize, all three pulling their own weight.

With a combined ERA under 2, senior Alex Nelson, junior Kat Wutz, and sophomore Lisa Bolten all take turns stepping onto the mound for the Mustangs making their pitching bench strong in numbers and longevity. 

The Mustangs will be traveling to Dordt University at the end of this week for a double header. 

Jones-Sitzmann is in her 22nd year as head coach of the softball program.
