Comm 455 “Connections Essay #1”

During my time at Morningside University I have always been a part of the band program. The director of the band knew I was a Graphic Design and Mass Communications major, so he asked me if I could design a logo for the May Term band tour that was being planned. He sent me an image that was artificially generated of the basic idea he wanted and asked that I actually make it look real.

I had made some logos before for assignments in my graphic design classes but I would say this was my first official logo design. I had never really used Adobe Illustrator for a real project before so learning it was a struggle, but now I am quite proficient in using the software. It was difficult to get the semi circle parts lined up while also trying to incorporate the Chicago skyline. Color was also a fun question to answer, what color do I make this? Keep in mind this logo will be incorporated into a lot of Morningside’s brands. Which of course there is going to be maroon incorporated into it someway or another. So I answered the question with a yellow-orange color to help make it pop more when paired with the aforementioned Maroon.

My big goal for this project was to make it as universal as possible. I’m talking t-shirts, keychains, social media, documents, pretty much anything that can be viewed. Speaking of documents, I was challenged by making the logo into a header for a document page that had detailed information for the trip. I found a picture of the Chicago skyline and changed a few colors of the base image to match the yellow-orange that I chose. I added the logo to the image, and it was a little hard to read because the colors matched so well that they blended in. So I added a drop shadow to the logo to provide better visibility.

I think this assignment is a great showcase of both of my majors and really shows off my skills in both fields. From social media to graphic design this logo encompasses all of the things I have learned at Morningside.
