The story is newsworthy because President Trump’s pick to be the drug czar in the administration, Rep. Tom Marino is pulling his name out from consideration.

There is a report of Marino weakening the Drug Enhancement Administration going after big drug distributors.

The article has a video that brings it the report to a broadcast story with analysis of the story. The report shows a picture of a tweet from Trump about Marino’s withdraw.

The article has a right size to it and straight to the point. The Associated Press contributed information to this report.

The audience is political fans, people interested in what Trump is doing, and Democrats who want to see Trump fail.

The lede is good because it summarizes why Marino is withdrawing his name from drug czar.

The point of view in this article is in the third person. The tweet is in first and second person. The rest of the article is written the third person to have objectivity.

A missing part of the article is a comment from Marino. He has not responded to these allegations yet.

Another missing part of this article is a comment from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. The story has a comment from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer about Marino.

This article is newsworthy because Trump is threatening to the licenses of NBC News and other networks because of reports of nuclear arsenal report. President Trump has been outspoken about Fake News, and it isn’t the first time he has blasted the big stations over reports.

He tweets that, “With all of the Fake News coming out of NBC News and the Networks, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License? Bad for country!”

Trump has been going after Fake News since the start of his presidency. It seems like this is not going to be the last time that reports and tweets like these.

The article gives what is needed to know for now. It is a new article when writing this news comment. There will probably be more information that comes out later on.

There is a prominent use of tweets from President Trump and MSNBC host Ali Velshi. The tweets inserted into the article before the pictures of the tweets, so there is no point of showing photos of the tweets if the tweets are already in the story.

The lede is not as compelling as it should be. It needs improvement to give the big summary of the article. The lede is a good start but doesn’t get the reader’s attention.

The audience is Trump supporters, people who don’t like Fake News, political fans, and people analyzing what Trump is doing. It is a full range of an audience, but it is Trump, so there will have lots of attention.

The point of view is the third person except for the tweets. The third person point of view is for the readers to understand the issue and know the facts. The first person is Trump speaking out on these reports from NBC.

A missing part of this article is how are the other networks going to respond to this. Another missing component is an official comment from NBC itself.  The last missing piece is what are the guidelines for networks like CBS, ABC, FOX, and NBC.

Story #2 Final Draft: Is Socializing a Problem in Today’s Society?

People not interacting often can be seen on Morningside Campus when you walk to class or the commons. Students are connected to their phones like it is a necessity.

Locally, this is not as big of a problem as it is society wise. Morningside College has the Morningside Activities Council, MAC, to help students stay on campus and interact with one another.

“MAC helps with the socializing problem on campus. They also spread the word about events that they are happening on campus as well. They are doing a good job of bringing students together for events,” Hailey Burrus, a fellow student at Morningside College.

MAC is a way for Morningside to help with the problem but not solve it completely. Socializing is a way for people to meet new people and interact with one another.

With the quick advancements of cell phones and social media, people are now focused on their phones more than ever. Phones make people not pay attention to others.

“Students are easily more distracted with technology and social media these days,” said Katie McClintock, a student at Morningside College.

Social media apps like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram help people attach themselves to their phones. Being online a lot will also help people be more open online than in person. Social media also makes it easier for people to hide their real feelings.

“The fact that conversation partners look into a screen instead of each other’s eyes, coupled with the fact that–more often than not–they don’t occupy the same physical space. This may make it feel less risky and uncomfortable to share personal feelings with another person,” said Howard Gardner and Katie Davis, authors of The App Generation.

It makes them distracted and not want to talk to them face-to-face. Social media is a problem because this is changing how people socialize with each other in today’s society.

“Technology will advance more and will make socializing not as important and more at their phones which means less face-to-face,” says Katie McClintock.

When someone is walking around or out in public, there is a possibility that they are on their cell phone and not noticing the world around them. Phones shouldn’t be playing a significant role like it is in students’ lives.

“Students use their phones more than ever which means that this helps them to ignore people when walking on campus,” said Dave Madsen, the head of the Mass Communications Department at Morningside College.

Is there a solution to the socializing problem? According to Dave Madsen, there is not a solution to this problem.

“People are used to doing everything on their phones all the time. Phones were not what they were ten years ago.”

Right now, there is a problem with no solution, and that is the challenging part that needs to be figured out before socializing is extinct. Socializing is a critical factor for society.

Without it, there is no society but just a group of people that are on their phones all the time. Society should not end up with people talking to each other online only.

Story #2 First Draft: Is Socializing a Problem in Today’s Society?

With the quick advancements of technology and social media, people are now more focused on their phones more than ever. Technology makes people not want to pay attention to others, distracts them, and not want to talk to them face-to-face. Social media is a problem because this is changing how people socialize with each other in today’s society.

This problem is one that can’t resolve in one day. This issue is going to be solved, but it will take a long time for the solution to be in effect in society.

Social media helps people hide online. People also use technology as a way to talk to others more easily.

“Students are easily more distracted with technology and social media these days,” said Katie McClintock, a student at Morningside College.

Social media apps like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram help people be online regularly. Being online a lot will also help people be more open online than in person. Social media also makes easier for people to hide their real feeling when they are online.

According to Howard Gardner and Katie Davis, who wrote the book, The App Generation: How Today’s Youth Navigate Identity, Intimacy, and Imagination in a Digital World, said, “Social networking sites have transformed many social interactions into considerably more public affairs than they would have been in pre-digital times.”

The social interaction in today’s society has become a factor as in why social media is so popular and used all the time. The advancement of technology is going to make this problem even worse. The more advanced social media becomes, the less interaction there will be.

“Technology will advance more and will make less socializing and more at their phones which means less face-to-face,” says Katie McClintock.

Face-to-face interaction is more important than communication on social media because people can see each other in person and see the reactions on the faces of who they are talking.

People not interacting often can be seen on Morningside Campus when you walk to class or the commons. Students are connected to their phones like it is a necessity.

“Students use their phones more than ever which means that this helps them to ignore people when walking on campus,” said Dave Madsen, the head of the Mass Communications Department at Morningside College.

Locally, this is not as big of a problem as it is society wise. Morningside College has the Morningside Activities Council, MAC, to help students stay on campus and interact with one another. MAC is a way for Morningside to help with the problem but not solve it completely.

“MAC helps with the socializing problem on campus. They also spread the word about events that they are happening on campus well. They are doing a good job of bringing students together for events,” Hailey Burrus, a fellow student at Morningside College.

Is there a solution to the socializing problem? According to Dave Madsen, there is not a solution to this problem. He also says that Morningside cannot fix the problem of socializing.

Right now, there is a problem with no solution, and that is the challenging part that needs to be figured out before socializing is extinct. Socializing is a critical factor in how a society runs and go about every day. Without it, there is no society but just a group of people that are on their phones all the time. Society should not end up with people talking to each other online only.

Society is at a roadblock as to where they should go next to save interaction offline and still advance in technology. It is time for a solution, and it needs to be thought of sooner than later before it is too late to do anything about it.

Media Comparison (News Comment 7)

-ABC News

The broadcast video goes straight to the headline and gives the central detail where people want to be tuned in to watch. The print story has the lead that is the State Department spokesperson talking to the press.

The length and content of the video are bringing information in about two minutes but also the most important details first.

The print story’s length and content are updating readers on the situation between Tillerson and Trump. The article is longer than the video, and the material in the print story is more detailed than the video.

Both the video and story use sources and quotes from the State Department spokesperson, Tillerson, Trump, and Trump’s tweet.

The print used sources like NBC News and a quote from an NBC report. The video used a quote from GOP Senator Bob Corker.

Both the print and video used attribution correctly to tell the readers where these quotes and sources.

Print and video can tell the viewers/readers where these came from and showed proof by linking the source in the story and having clips of that person(s) speaking.

The role of sounds and pictures help the audience see what is being talked about and see what the person(s) look like and match the voice to a face.

Something interesting about comparing the print story to a broadcast video is how they are both about the same topic and article but also can be two entirely different stories at the same time too.

Alex Watters Interview

Morningside College is improving the accessibility for handicaps, but he thinks that it’s not “fast enough” in his opinion.

Alex Watters is a first-year advisor at Morningside College who came into class to discuss how the college can be more accessible.

Watters said that “costs is a big issue to have more accessibility and demographics of who’s going to use it.”

The college needs to be updating and add on more accessibility in the older buildings. Morningside is an old college that needs to be often updated.

The older buildings have ground level opening in the back but no way of getting up to the upper levels. Getting to the higher levels in the buildings more accessible is something that Morningside needs to think about when renovating the buildings.

He said that “build an elevator outside of the buildings” could be a possibility but it all goes back to costs.

The college needs to “address some concerns” when it comes to updating the accessibility all around like the older dorms also need to become more accessible for handicaps.

He said, “Adapt to some things at the campus like the Student Center.” There used to be an elevator, but it was taken out to make the dining hall “more presentable.”

He mentioned that if the updating and add-ons do happen, that means tuition goes up for every student at Morningside. The increase in expenditure is one thing that students don’t want to deal with when paying for their education.

It is all about the costs of updating and add-ons that the college has to worry about if it is needed or not.

This story is newsworthy because Tim Allen, a well-known actor, is expressing his opinion on why his show “Last Man Standing” that aired on ABC is not on television anymore.

The lede is good because it reminds the readers that the show is not on-air and why Allen is still talking about this issue.

The audience for this story is fans who are still surprised that the show disappeared unexpectedly, fans of Allen, and conservatives who want shows like “Last Man Standing” to be on television.

The point of view in this story is first and third persons.

The third person point of view is the writer writing to the readers. The first person point of view is Allen’s quote about his opinion on this issue.

The article is short but also straight to the point for readers to quickly read and understand the subject in the story.

The article gives credit to the Hollywood Reporter for using their words about CMT and “Last Man Standing.”

The missing items in this story is an official quote from ABC about why the show is off-air and an official quote from CMT about what made them not want to revive the show.

Observation Exercise: The Library

The library is big, almost empty, and quiet. The library has two levels where there are no classrooms, just places to study.

The first level has more chairs, tables, and open space for students to move around. This level only has two full bookcases.

The second level has the 23 bookcases full of books for almost all classes. There is some space on this level to study but not as much as the first tier.

The library is peaceful and relaxing to go to after a long day of classes. The library doors open and close and people walking up and down the stairs are loud and easily distracting sounds for someone who’s studying.

Students come and go in the library. Some of them walk through to get to their next class. While others walk to find a place to do their homework.

The main sounds of the library are people walking, their car keys moving with their backpacks, setting their bags down, and going through the backpacks to find what they need to help them study.s

Some conversations are going on in the library but can barely understand them. Once in a while, a conversation can get very loud to where everyone in the library can hear every detail of that conversation.

Observation Exercises

Describe a person you talked to before class

She has blonde hair, blue eyes, and about 5’5″. Her face was red because she was stressing about balancing school and work at the same time.

She was wearing a green sweatshirt and gray sweatpants. She had on black and pink tennis shoes.

She was carrying a black and light-blue backpack, which was full. She was also carrying a black water bottle with a sky-blue ring around it.

Describe the foods next to you

The donut is in the shape of a ball. The image of the donut is chocolate with some sugar sprinkled all around.

It is soft and squishy. It tastes like more chocolate and sugar.

The creme de Pirouline wafer is cream filled. They are fragile and hard.

It is a stick with a chocolate swirl around the wafer.

There is also dark chocolate inside the wafers. It tastes like more wafers than dark chocolate.

Scavenger Hunt Failure

The search went wrong because nobody wanted to talk. They just wanted to go to class or go somewhere else.

I walked around campus with my head cut off like a chicken for about twenty minutes.

It felt like a waste of time to me as a writer because I wanted to have a good story but came up with nothing.

I became very disappointed in myself as a journalist and started to think that I am going to be a lousy reporter in the future.

The students were in classes, and barely anyone was outside of the buildings. The students that I did see were ignoring everyone else around them.

The part that made it worse for me is that as I was trying to search for people to talk to, I started to get nervous and scared. What also didn’t help me is my anxiety problem coming back, and my blood pressure to go up.

So, I was not able to complete this assignment to the fullest abilities.
