Photo Story

April 3rd, 2024
Me showing off my outfit for a photoshoot me and one winner did.
From left to right: James Miranda, Camrie Miranda, and Duffee Miranda all pose to take a picture in front of the Women of Excellence banner. Camrie’s parents have always supported their daughter in her endeavors while in Sioux City, so they wanted to make sure they came to this event.
This is me and Alexie Miranda, Camrie’s youngest sister. Similarly to Camrie’s parents, Alexie loves Camrie and she considers me to be her best friend. Having Alexie at the awards means a lot of Camrie and I.
Camrie’s boyfriend, Reis, took Polaroids of the Miranda family. I really loved the way he stands while taking photos, which sounds weird but I promise it’s just me noticing the little things in everything, so I took this photo of him taking a picture. While it maybe isn’t the most interesting photo, I think it means a lot.
This is a Camrie’s BeReal at the event. She won the Women of Promise award, so I took this 0.5x picture of her holding her award with her family and friends behind me! In the smaller picture you can see Reis, Duffee, James, Brylie (the middle sibling of the Miranda’s), Alexie, and me.
Semehar Ghebrekidan, Camrie’s mentor and former boss, also went in support of Camrie. Semehar won the Woman of Promise award last year, so she was in charge of giving the new woman her award. This new woman was Camrie! Semehar has also been in the news recently as she has been put on suspension from working at the city of Sioux City. So, in retaliation she had the idea to wear what she called, “ankle monitor couture.” Essentially she claimed that she couldn’t be told to take off her fake ankle monitor because it was performance art.
Camrie and I have been best friends since my freshman year. This is possibly the last photo we will take together both dressed up until graduation. I am continusouly so proud of my best friend and roommate. Camrie truly inspires me every day to be a better version of myself and I don’t know where I would be without her.
Camrie got this dress at her place of work in Omaha, NE and it unfortunately didn’t fit her when she brought it to Sioux City. She asked me to try it on, and it fit like a glove. I have never been one for dressing up, but especially not for wearing dresses. In formal events, I can usually be found wearing a jumpsuit or a suit. I promised Camrie at the beginning of this year that I would wear a dress to a formal event, as it is something that is so out of my comfort zone but we both know that dresses look good. Camrie and I love doing events together, so we are always found in Sioux City usually hanging out together!

A majority of my visual journal is told through the captions. To sum it up though, I recently went to the Women Of Excellence awards.

The Women Aware Awards dinner is an annual event that is truly remarkable. With March being Women’s History Month, the Women of Excellence awards is held during the month of March.

Every year women within the Siouxland community are welcomed and encouraged to show their support of women who have helped them grow as individuals or who have helped their communities. This year 17 individuals were nominated and 7 of those women received awards.

This event costs $75 a ticket with the option to buy a full table for $500. Women Aware’s Board President Clara Macfarlane was in charge of setting up how everyone got nominated. Usually the individuals who get nominated are from people in the community nominating someone they know. Semehar, former Diversity Liaison in Sioux City, nominated Camrie Miranda for the Rising Woman of Excellence.

Anyone who attends, or has attended, will always remember the womanly love that is shown at this event.

Assignments 4-12

February 22nd, 2024

Human Interest

Rachel Spier holding her cat Suki. She has wanted an orange cat for a while now, so her getting this cat made her extremely happy.

Animal

This is Sylvie, Camrie Miranda’s cat in Papillion, NE. Sylvie is a gray and white cat that has been in the Miranda household for a few years. Sylvie is a Russian Blue cat. Another cat not pictured that the Mirandas have is a white cat named Snowbie. She is a Khao Manee.

Sports / Competition

A show choir competition in La Vista, Nebraska. Brylie Miranda is in the second row from the front in the red dress on the left. They placed 3rd after the competition was done.

On The Job

Moonshine Russel (laying down) and Rudy (the Ref) doing their jobs. Both Moonshine and Rudy make their livings by doing staged wrestling very similarly to how actors make their income.

Food

An Asian version of a corndog. This is a spiral corndog similar to something that would be found at an American carnival. The bottom half of the corndog is a hotdog type food, but made out of fish. Then the top half is filled with melted cheese. This can be made in the microwave, oven, or air fryer.

Interior

An empty chair inside of the library on the Morningside Campus.

Night

An evening picture of a car parked looking at the other parked cars. The windshield is covered in rain and there is a little figurine on the car’s dash.

Laboratory

Nathan Ewertz and his son Landon at Ken Ewertz’s farm. Nathan explores the whole farm with his son. Ken is somewhere deep in the corn. It is hard to see him in this picture, but he is there!

Weather

After an intense snow storm in Fargo, ND the grass and sidewalks are covered in snow. The trees are also covered in snow, making them look very delicate.

Portraits Reading Quiz

February 7th, 2024

The chapter about Portraits discusses a few specific parts of a portrait that makes a good portrait. It states that there are clues that point to the inner person of someone. Those clues include face, eyes, and body language. The chapter also discusses the difference between going into a photoshoot with nothing planned versus going into a photoshoot with a solid idea of what you want to shoot. I think this portrait of me is a well taken photo and I do love it. I think it gets my, then, theater kid vibes as well as I think they positioned me well enough to get a posed shot without my body language looking too stiff. My photographer also took a few photos that I was genuinely laughing in, and I also really liked those, but they all have water marks on them and I feel it would be a little unnecessary for this assignment. I think that this photo captured the face and body language well. Through the way I am lit up and posed my face is well lit and my pose looks fairly comfortable (even if it wasn’t at the time).

I think the main issue this image “gets wrong” is my eyes. I am struggling even now to see the way my eyes look. In a majority of the other edited photos I got back, you can see my eyes as they are a little better lit. Sadly, this image doesn’t have the same clarity as my other images do. It is because of this that I feel like you can’t really get the full picture here. Yes it was a staged photo in a studio, but I feel like it just doesn’t hit as home as — for example — my senior photo. I think this could probably be fixed by taking it into a program like Photoshop and lightening my eyes (and the spots around them) just a little bit.

My senior photo from Fargo, ND.

I went out sledding this year with some friends and someone (not sure on her name, she left before I could ask her name) was sledding down on a piece of cardboard.

News & Feature Photos

This photo provided by Jiji Press shows a Japan Airlines plane on fire on a runway of Tokyo’s Haneda Airport on January 2, 2024. A Japan Airlines plane was in flames on the runway of Tokyo’s Haneda Airport on January 2 after apparently colliding with a coast guard aircraft, television reports said. What would the normal / boring version of this picture look like?

The boring version of this picture would be a picture of a plane being on the ground that was not destroyed nor on flames. It would also likely be daytime and just be a picture of a plane on a runway.

Then describe what the photographer did to make the image interesting, creative, and/or unique.

I’m assuming this photographer took the flames and brightened them and turned up the black point making the darker parts of the image appear even darker. This picture was also taken at an angle not too steep nor too flat.

What would the normal / boring version of this picture look like?

The boring version of this picture would be a photo taken from the seats. If the photographer was in the stadium, they probably would have had spectators in the way of getting a good shot. The normal version of this picture is not likely taken from a drone.

Then describe what the photographer did to make the image interesting, creative, and/or unique.

The main thing this photographer did to make this image interesting was taking it through the lens of a drone. They also framed it very well, showing the circling of the stadium. They also used shades and hues to their advantage; the way you can tell who is rooting for what based on the teal colors within the crowd.
