Hurricane Dorian made its first appearance in the Abacos Islands in the Bahamas as a Category 5 hurricane. Winds reached an excessive speed of 185 mph as well as 220mph gusts. Dorian took its time prowling through the Bahamas. The hurricane lasted 14 hours. The slower the storm moves, the more time it has to destroy communities in its path. If you’re living costal, those are the types of hurricanes to be very afraid of. As of this Monday, the hurricane moved down to a Category 4. This is nothing to be excited about because Category 4 hurricane winds range from 131 to 155 mph. Houses and shopping centers will be destroyed along with long- term power outages and water shortages. Not to mention humans being at risk of death in certain areas. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reports, “Although the center of Dorian is forecast to move near, but parallel too, the Florida east coast, only a small deviation of the track toward the west would bring the core of the hurricane onshore.” The deadliest aspect of a hurricane tends to be storm surges. This is flooding cause by seawater being pushed onshore by winds. NHC predicts four-to-seven feet of storm surge along the Florida coast.

This article I believe is based off of human interest. In news writing such as this it is important to inform the reader on all of the facts and details about the hurricane. The way the author wrote this made it very easy for someone who doesn’t know much about hurricanes to better understand the severity of the situation. There are good pieces of information that were sourced from scientists that have studied natural disasters for years. I like articles that are concise and are straight to the point and that’s what this article was.

Include a link to the story, Madison.

Keep your summary fairly short; just the high points. My guess is this story falls under the category of surveillance/watchdog. It is letting people know what is coming and helps them prepare.
