Being a Student Athlete

final draft

Being a Student Athlete

After a week of teachers loading you up with school work, practices, lifting, games and working a job on the weekends, that doesn’t leave a person with a lot of time. You know that school work is due the next week but you figure you have time and you keep putting it off until its due the next morning at 8AM. Procrastination only leads to stress. Many student athletes have been put into this scenario and have had to learn the hard way, but organization is key.

Staying organized and not procrastinating are two very important ideas to practice on a daily basis. Ashley Boer is a junior advertising major at Morningside College who understands that these steps in college are worth the extra time.

Here are some tips from Boer about how to better organize your time as a student athlete, “Having a planer and being able to write out all of your assignments helps keep you ahead of the game and on track” Boer continues, “also, having an area that is quiet and organized helps you stay focused. Boer stresses that these are not easy habits to acquire, but with dedication it will help you in the long run.

Being a student athlete is stressful, but how well do we understand the pressure that athletes feel during a semester. With classes and practices every day, it may be hard to find some free time to do fun things. Anthony Ventura is a senior at Morningside who plays football. Ventura has been at Morningside college for two and a half years.

While juggling football practices and study sessions, he explains that there is little time for fun, “There are always papers and assignments that are due, so thinking about being able to go out with friends on weekends during season is not likely.” Finding a balance is important so that athletes can enjoy their college years.

This may be hard but here are some helpful tips that Ventura has learned to implement, “Being organized and trying to get ahead before the weekend rolls around gives you more time on weekends to go out and do fun things.”

Being a student athlete isn’t all negative. There are many great opportunities waiting for you after college and being a student athlete only helps you to achieve those opportunities.

Sonora Foresman is a Senior at Morningside College who runs track. Foresman explains how track has helped build her up for the world after graduation, “Being involved in a team is very attractive to employers because they like to see people who have practiced time management and leadership skills.”  Being a part of a team and learning how to work well with others is a huge part of the working world. Foresman says,”Being able to say I was a captain and that I had to resolve arguments between players is what help me get my job after college.”

Key Moments from the Impeachment Inquiry Hearing: Vindman, Williams, Morrison and Volker Testify

Since we were talking about ethics and libel cases I wanted to find an article about that. So i looked on The New York Times under ethics and found this.

This article talks about Mike Pence’s two senior most aides pushing back against colleague, Jennifer Williams after she testified saying President Trump’s phone call with the Ukraine’s president was “unusual” because of its focus on domestic politics.

There were a lot of quotes from different people saying they didn’t think the call was unusual. Later on in the article, it comes out that Donald Trump showed interest in obtaining damaging information about Democrats from Ukraine. Although the writer doesn’t specify further about this, but this would be unethical of Trump to release that information.

Keanu Reeves is dating a woman close to his own age. Why is that so shocking?

This article is all about how Keanu Reeves is dating someone close to his age and why everyone on the internet is in awe. Aja Romano, the author, starts off by talking about how he is seen in Holllywood and how social media explains the he is “sad Keanu” and “lonely Keanu”. The author mostly talks about his girlfriend Alexandra Grant using quotes and people who know who she is to explain her.

They are focusing a lot on Alexandra Grant. They focus on her age, her appearance, and her silent achievements. This is a good profile because there is a frame to the story. The author is trying to inform readers who she is and what she offers. There seems to be a lot of haters because of her appearance, but the way it is written is in favor of Alexandra Grant. They put tweets from fans appreciating that Keanu is an older man dating someone of age.

The last conversation that was had with Ashley Boer was about how we were going to be late for class. We hoped we wouldn’t get in trouble and figured since we were talking in with three others that were in the same class that got out late, we would probably be fine. Boer said, “I really hope so.” As we walked into the library building someone held the door open for us and we both thanked the man. We walked into the classroom and our teacher asked if we all road together, we laughed and sat down for class.

Boer was wearing a white Carhartt beanie and her brown hair with blonde high lights were popping out. Her hair is medium in length, almost to the middle of her back. she is wearing peach and black ombre leggings with a white Okoboji sweatshirt. Her 8 1/2 size feet was wearing light grey DMX Reebok shoes. Boer had big blue and she is tan.

Nicholas Loya has high hopes to change the education system.

Nicholas Loya moved to Sioux City from Fremont, California to play football along with study secondary english education with an endorsements in coaching and ESL.

The reason Loya chose to go into the education field is because he hopes to make the classroom fun and interesting for students. Loya said, “I don’t want students to have the same experiences I had dreading having to go to class.” His hopes are to make his classroom interactive while making learning fun for everyone.

Loya had two teachers in his 12 years of schooling that he felt were good teachers. The first teacher was Mr. Navarro who was his high school geometry teacher. Although he doesnt have plans to teach math, he still liked the teaching style. The second was Mrs. Anderson who was his high school english teacher. Both of these teachers helped shape Loya’s decision to enter the education system.

It is all too common for students to fall disinterested in school. We need more teachers who are motivated to make the classroom a fun learning environment. That is why Nicholas Loya is going to be a great English teacher some day.

California fire season likely to last through December, with no rain in sight

This article talks about how the fires in California are not going to end due to the lack of rain and the dry brush. They begin the article talking about a small fire on Halloween began to glow on the hillside of Santa Paula. The fire was small but due to the coast winds, he fire spread immensely.

This story is considered a spot feature because it is breaking news. It is talking about a disaster that is happening and that if effecting family homes. It also talks about how the lack of rain will make this matter worse.

Story #3 draft Madison Hartman

Things to fix: Don’t end with quote.

Topic one:

With the rise of tuition prices, students feel the pressure during school and even after they graduate. Tuition prices have increased 36% from 2008 to 2018 leaving student loan payments averaging $400 in monthly payments. Morningside nursing student Emma Gerber agrees college is very expensive. “Quote from Emma about loans and expenses of college.”

Onto the next story:

Topic two:

Many college students think e-cigarette use is relatively harmless but that assumption is far from the truth. Nicotine not only is highly addictive but also places youth at risk. The brain is not fully developed until the age of 25 and exposure to nicotine can causing lasting cognitive and behavioral issues. Morningside student Rylie Muhlbauer comments on the increased usage of vaping at her college. “Quote from Rylie.”

Onto the next story:

Topic three:

Morningside Volleyball advances to the National tournament after their team win Wednesday night at Dakota Wesleyan University. A lot was on the line for the team, if they didn’t win this game they wouldn’t have advanced to the National Tournament. Assistant coach Braden Hall shares his thoughts on the outcome of the game. “Quote from Braden about the game.”

She lost her son to addiction, then lost her house to save her daughter

Erin Kane, her son Aiden, and her mother Nan Warren, near their home in North Carolina.

A mother’s story on the grave cost of addiction treatment in America.

Warren spent more than $40,000 including travel and related expenses to get Erin, her daughter to treatment. The mother had to refinance her house, eventually sell the home, load up her credit cards, and tap out an inheritance from her father and the rest of her savings. The good news is Erin hasn’t had a drink since 2017 but still struggles with an eating disorder.

I think this article for me personally would be very hard to stay neutral and not put my opinion in there. I’ve had similar events happen in my family that have rubbed me the wrong way from this topic in general so if I was assigned to this piece, it would be hard! I think the writer German Lopez does a great job telling the families stories and getting quotes from the mother. If this were turned into a broadcast story I think it would be an interesting one for families who haven’t had to deal with addiction problems. The story would have to be shortened quite a bit since this story is on the longer side. It takes a very strong mother to not give up on her children especially when they have gone through this amount of hardship.
