Texaco Gas Truck Overturns Outside of Town

A Texaco Gas truck overturned on 48th street and Correctionville Road, spilling gas on the streets and ditches.

Cars were managed to be rerouted for the two hours it took to flush the gasoline from the streets. Four families were evacuated because of the sewer-line gas.

“The Firemen followed catastrophe and hazmat procedures set up beforehand for just such an occurrence” according to Fire Chief Charles Hochandel.

Summer Unrest Sweeps Central High School

False fire alarm is sounded 3 times in response to the suspension of 5 students who were caught smoking marijana in the school parking lot, resulting in the suspension of 10 students involved.

Disgruntled Students were the culprits, and this is too follow a food fight that happened on Tuesday. Principal Laura Vibelius commented “Not so much unrest because of suspensions, but because of summer vacation being so near,” saying she doesn’t believe the previous incidents had anything to do with it. She sees no continuation in the behavior coming forward.

Firefighter Breaks Leg

Local firefighter Bob Harwood responded to a incident when he was brought in to rescue a Calico cat from a tree.

He showed much bravery in saving Suzanne and Samantha Decker’s cat, climbing 50 feet up in an oak tree for the cat. He didn’t have an issues going up, but coming down a dead limb broke, sending Bob down the last 15 feet of the tree breaking his leg.

He is reportedly doing just fine at St. Luke’s Hospital, and the cat is also doing fine because he landed on top of Bob.

College sports, aren’t cancelled. (Yet)

College sports in limbo, but the 2020 season conversation is only getting started. Big colleges like Michigan and Michigan state aren’t going to be playing this fall, that doesn’t rule out a spring season according to Big10, who announced on Aug 11 that they will be moving to a spring season in light of current Covid-19 issues.

The Big10 hasn’t stopped anything, however. The Navy “Midshipmen” got beat in spectacular fashion by BYU. “The two least likely to party schools playing a game together wont harm anyone” a twitter user tweeted this week, and other small colleges across the country continue to play football regardless of concerns

“In reviewing the data and incidence of COVID-19 in the region, the GPAC COP believes that health and safety mechanisms can be put in place to create a positive fall sports season,” the GPAC (Great Plains Athletic Conference) said, Aug 12, 2020.

Of course, the NCAA is allowing opting out and keeping of eligibility (years able to play) even for those that play this year.  This is an interesting course of action, because many of athletes wont be opting out but be playing.

Others, don’t agree with the GPAC and the NCAA’s ruling to keep college football. ESPN even provides a list of players from power 5 conferences who are opting out due to safety concerns, which is a concern shared with many college football players around the country.

There could be future issues down the road for it, but the NCAA is doing everything they really can do in this scenario, because they wont stop corona parties and they wont stop college students from partying but the BIG10 is doing great thing to protect the players as well as potentially play football in the future. Also, from their perspective they’re avoiding potential law suits under some unforeseen circumstances.

With college football receiving criticism for not playing from people like our president, they haven’t backed down. With Trump tweeting “Big Ten Football is looking really good, but may lose Michigan, Illinois and Maryland because of those Governors’ ridiculous lack of interest or political support.” Because college sports are political in nature.

“As more and more college athletic departments cut sports programs, the financial wreckage due to the coronavirus pandemic is becoming devastatingly clear — and that’s without factoring in a $4 billion loss if the 2020 football season is canceled, a development that would forever alter college-level sports.” According to ESPN. Which to me, makes me happy to know that they’re willing to take such a large smack to their income for the safety of the student-athlete.

This is also relevant because some programs are cutting certain sports from their roster to cut costs, as well as bringing on less attendance to games.

But college sports aren’t cancelled. (Yet). College students will continue to be college students, and we can’t stop that. That’s the biggest issues facing college sports in 2020 is Corona outbreaks on campus due to off campus activities.

Some groups calling for the cancellation of the 2020 season state that there isn’t as much known about so they do not feel comfortable hosting a season while others cite the major issues of losing revenue and the CDC changing guidelines biweekly as reason to continue.

One Dead, Three Hospitalized in accident on Highway 28

A two car collision two miles east of South Sioux City left Moyar Quick age 65, dead when the vehicle he was driving collided with a truck driven by Randy Radin, 17 at 11 am yesterday morning.

The survivors were transported to Sioux City General Hospital, one survivor is listen in good, another in Fair, and one in critical condition. Dorothy Quick of South Sioux City, Maxine Steuerwald of Lawton, and Randy Radin were all involved.

South Iowa High Patrolman, Patric Stewart said both vehicles were traveling in a westerly direction on the two-lane highway. Quick attempted to pass Radin, but his rear end struck the Radin and sent both into the ditch on the north side. Quick rolled once, the accident remains under investigation.

The autopsy has found Mr. Quick had a heart attack while driving the car, which resulted in his death. Radin is currently in critical condition, Maxine is set to me released, and Mrs. Quick has already been released.

South Iowa Bans Radar Guns

The reason the radar guns were banned is because it is believed that the guns were causing cancer in highway patrolmen. This ban will be happening over all of Sioux City, South Iowa. The ban is currently in effect and will be taking 70 radar guns out of service, troopers will continue to use the radar guns mounted outside of their cruiser, however.

This is the first of the police agencies to ban radar guns two months after three minimal officers in Cedar Rapids filed workman’s compensations claims saying they developed cancer from held-held units.

Yesterday, the police spokesman Adam Smith Said “The feeling here is to err on the side of caution until more is known about the issue,” Smith said. “The whole situation is under review.”

News Comment 08/26/2020

Today I read an article from CNN, and I am actually not a fan of CNN. The Article was “Kenosha shooting suspect is a former member of a youth police cadet program, Illinois police say” by Paul Murphy and I found I actually liked it. It felt very informative and that obvious bias wasn’t crammed down my throat.

Although my personal reaction is, that this is a major tragedy. Both parties are guilty, Kyle for bringing a rifle to a protest and escalating the situation, and the skateboard guy for escalating it as well. I find it to be tragic reflection of American politics and it saddens me to see the loss of life because of it.

I also loved the sheriff’s response to deputizing citizens, he thought it was a terrible idea and I’d be inclined to agree after what has previously happened this week.

Overall, I thought it was a well written article and I enjoyed reading it more than I thought I would!

The Man, The Myth, The Legend

This week I had the pleasure of interviewing Brandon Claire, also known as: Clare, Big B, Burrito Brandino, BC, and much, much more.

Politically, he’s a fan of getting rid of laws against victimless crime, therefore legalization of recreational drugs and prostitutions.

He’s from Sac City IA, home the world’s biggest popcorn ball (It’s true, I’ve seen it). He’s been playing football since the 4th grade and is known for his loud personality. The only thing taller than him, is his personality. It really shows in the “Clarification show” which is his radio show (8:30pm, starting Monday). He is very much a man of the people and is loved. He claims to have come up with “The Claire-ificaiton show” on the toilet, which is where all great ideas come from.

He really is a personality for radio, and is defiantly worth giving a listen. When asked for any final comments, he stated “I like pineapples.”

Hi, I’m Jacob

I am currently a sophomore at Morningside, and am majoring in History and hopefully am going to get to law school! I play on the football team and I love to watch MMA.
