He stepped out from the airport, to be greeted by a family he’s never even met. To go to a school he knew nothing about in a country he’s never been to before.

This is the reality for many students around the world who visit countries as foreign exchange students.

“It was completely different culture wise than German school, I really liked American food too!” Leo Hoess said when asked about living in America.

Lincoln High school in Sioux Falls holds an exchange program with Humbolt Gymnasium in Potsdam, Germany. Potsdam is a town outside of Berlin, which acts as a suburb.

A transition that gets you into “The American Lifestyle.”

Both Leo and Basti Kuhn had elected to stay with my family during their exchange trips to America because they saw the Midwestern lifestyle as something uniquely American. Life in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by farms and all of the small town activities that go with it.

“Guns are cool, the food is great, and honestly it’s a really good experience living in America even if it is for a short time. I really liked shooting guns and going to classes! The classes were different but still super nice.” Basti said when asked about the major differences in living in Germany and the United States.

Both noted being overwhelmed right away, being thrown into a foreign country with English being their second language left them open to slang.

“It’s like, listening to something and getting only part of what is told. Like a puzzle” Leo compared the language barrier.

With German being my second language, I was able to help break the barrier for them and that is why we elected to host exchange students.

Basti is a major fan of American football and he really wanted that experience when he came here. We were able to take him to practice and give him an American football experience. He even got to experience his first Friday night lights.

Leo was unable, but was able to watch an NFL game later in the year!

“They were both incredible to learn about and get a good view on America from a German perspective as well as learn about German culture.” Jim Murphy stated, one of my parents who agreed to host the student.

Exchange students are a great way to sample a culture and to get to see the world through another point of view.

I read an article from CNN about not traveling by the CDC for thanksgiving because of Corona. I thought it was interesting but I really don’t think asking people to not have thanksgiving is good. People understand the risk, and personally I will be having thanksgiving.

It’s only a recommendation but I do believe it really isn’t that big of a deal, my family always has a small thanksgiving anyways. but it does say don’t travel if you’e been in contact with someone in the last 14 days.

I’m not sure, I’m for sure no expert of covid and corona, so I’ll probably keep my mouth shut about it after this.

News Article 11/12/2020

I read an article from Fox News about a Florida man arrested for having a freakout in a drive through…

Honestly having worked customer service this doesn’t really surprise me, it just validates the fact that I really think some customers are just stupid. He caused a crazy big commotion over the fact that they had forgot lettuce on his burger.

I think it shouldn’t have been that big of a deal, and he should have just went around or gone inside and asked for lettuce on a burger but instead he pounded on the drive through window yelling.

I get that he wanted lettuce on his burger, but at 11:30 in the morning to cause a commotion over it, it really isn’t that big of a deal. It’s not the end of the world, and the employees probably get paid minimum wage.

Although I think the story is funny in a sad, sort of true way. Because the best form of humor is the truth, sometimes people just take things a little far.

La Nina will have little effect this year

La Nina effects off the coast of South America have been observed which is going to have little effect on a colder year

La Nina is a yearly occurrence which pushes warm waters from the coast of South America to the coast of Africa allowing colder waters from the bottom of the ocean to rise up to the surface.

Due to trapped greenhouse gasses, this wont give nearly the cooling effect it has in previous years. This is partially reasoning to why these last few years (2016-2020) have been some of the warmest in recent record.

This means less snow, less precipitation in the Midwest and the United States. We can expect a very dry winter, and a warm one. This because it will not only be a warm but the cold fronts will be going toward Indonesia and Australia.

This has a global impact on rain, because places like Indonesia and Australia will get more rain as a result while southern states can possibly get a drought

“Usually in November it seems pretty cold, especially in Iowa. But Uh, lately it been pretty warm in the 70’s and 60’s feelin’ pretty good. Probably because of the El Nino” Jaylen Portis stated when asked about the recent warmth.

Joe Biden leads the presidential Election

While it’s still too early to call the presidential election because Nevada is dragging it’s toes in counting ballots, there is only an 8 thousand vote difference between Donald Trump and Joe Biden.

Biden is currently leading with 264 electors compared to Trump’s 214. The only way either party could win in this scenario is to take Nevada because the other states are leaning heavily toward Trump haven’t been called in his favor yet. If he wins all the states he’s projected to win, he will have 265 electors to Bidens 264. The final remaining state will be Nevada.

Although it is extremely suspicious that the blue states were called at roughly 20% pro Biden while the red states get called very late with a heavy Republican lead and a large number counted.

There is also a large number of Republicans claiming voter fraud, but this is a developing story

Student Natalie Semin weighs in: “This election is dragging on, and I’m kinda over it at this point. I just wanna know who is president and for it to be over with.”

Antonio Brown goes to the Buccs

Antonio Brown who is no stranger to controversy has moved to the Buccaneers which has joined an already loaded roster including Tom Brady and 5 other ranked in the top 100 players. Currently the Buccaneers are 6-2 which isn’t terrible and with Antonio Brown coming to join the wide receiver core they will be able to make many plays.

The explosive Buccs roster should be able to win the NFC south this year, which would be impressive for a team that went 7-9 last year.

“Antonio Brown is a man that doesn’t know what he wants, in life. I feel like, he was with the Steelers and should have stayed with the Steelers and he should have stayed with them, but there was this whole controversy about not being paid enough so he went to free agency. I think he should have just stuck and taken the deal instead of being a baby about it.” Ridge Hoffman stated on his opinion on Antonio Brown and his movement around the league.

Optimistic, because Jayden looks to the future and looks on the positives of life. She plans everything out, and pins things on Pintrist. The other day, she was looking at houses and trying to find a nice place to live in North Carolina. She really wants to live there, and she is currently planning a future out there!

I thought this article on the presidential race was interesting, but I think the race itself has been a poor example of how we as Americans vote.

Fox Meantions that Trump called Michigan early, which is true. I didn’t like that he called it so early into the election count but I noticed at roughy ~4am 139,000 ballots for Joe Biden were discovered according to twitter, and there have been some graphs circulating that just make me confused. If it’s true, it is mathematically impossible Donald trump didn’t receive those ballots and why is only Twitter covering it?

I think Trump is going to demand a recount and have the Supreme Court look into about everything he can in order to try and get results thrown out.

While I have 0 trust for twitter generally, I think they could potentially be on to something in this situation and even on their calling out of Donald Trump.

This article makes me want to get a tin foil hat and humor the conspiracy theorists, too.

Man, are they taking their sweet time to count votes too.

Am I allowed to make jokes on here? If so, what do ballot counting and Sioux City road construction have in common?

I’ll probably never see the end in my lifetime.

Today there was a Shooting at 617 Black Street

Local Man, Richard Brunson, 50 shot his wife Laurette Kenny Brunson, 38 only hours after their wedding.

It happened after Laurette had thrown a plate of macaroni salad at Richard. The couple had been living together for 4-5 months at the house. A neighbor called the police after hearing the gunshot and the groom was nowhere to be found.

Here is what Walter Course, the neighbor had to say:

“I heard the sound of the shot. or, I think I did. It was like a “pop pop pop.” Then I heard the son come out and yell ‘She’s been shot and can’t breathe”

Mrs. Brunson is in good condition, is not dead.

And a quote from Sgt Mann

“Happened at 5pm, after she threw a plate of macaroni salad at him. His whereabouts are still unknown”
