I read about the senate confirming Amy Coney Barrett to the role of Supreme Court justice, which I found incredibly interesting. I mostly disagree with it because back in 2016 in the last months of Obama’s presidency his nomination was rejected because the senate felt “The next justice should be picked by the next president” and hasn’t maintained their same stance.

I feel this article is biased, but I very much enjoyed reading it because it seems like it comes from President Donald Trump, and that it seems well written.

The article explains the reasoning behind the nomination of justice Barrett and how they found her to be more middle than conservative. I have noticed the uproar against a conservative Supreme Court but I think that’s more of the intention of the Supreme Court. I feel the intention is to be more conservative and the house and senate to be more progressive.

Overall, due to the reasoning the White House has provided I really think that there is a gross overreaction specifically on the internet about the nomination. I think it’s a decent nomination, but I think Trump should have waited.

I read about the double standard on twitter, and I have to agree with Fox News on this article. I notice a severe left wing pretense on twitter and I notice censorship along the conservative side while the liberal side tends to run rampant without consequences.

It also states how negativity surrounding the president tends to pick up a lot of help while they ignore anything Biden does wrong. It especially highlights the censorship of fake news, and how easily somethings are spread and not as fact checked based on which side they are on.

I really liked how Fox handled the issue, but I don’t like how they played the victim instead of offering solutions. I thought it was interesting to just the full conservative side and see how the media sometimes treats ideals unfairly. I do know that youtube has been famous for allowing more conservative media to thrive, too.

Story #2 (Final)

Declaring a winner (The 2020 presidential debate)

To say the least, that was awful.

“It was a shit show, but when I dug to the bottom of the shit pile I thought Trump won,”-Dylan Miller.

President Donald Trump interrupted a total of 145 times, according to Fox News. Showing a lack of control by the moderator. Even Biden is quoted saying, “Will you shut up, man?”

This is not actions that should be taken by two potential presidents of the United States.

For a debate between two potential heads of state, was embarrassing “It was stupid. I don’t like how it is a giant pissing match and isn’t about politics. It’s just two old dudes yelling,” Bryson Janousek. The amount Ad Hominem attacks (Personal attacks) states how woefully unprepared both sides were. Biden seemed very well put together at times, but falling to the “Trump Trap” often.

The Trump Trap is when Trump circles back, and then begins to try to overwhelm with irrelevant facts and attacks which will misdirect the rebuttal.

Biden was no stranger to attacks, either. “It’s hard to get any words in, with this clown” Biden himself stated referring to Trump.

“So, that was an absolute mess. Whoever wins at this rate, will leave a large amount of people unhappy enough to create political violence,” stated Kristine Honomichl. “The growing wake of political violence and acceptance of it is growing. Especially when referencing to Kenosha, WI where Kyle Rittenhouse traded shots with an antifa attacker,” she also stated.

Kristine isn’t alone in fearing for political violence. Twitter has erupted in attacks on Trump, and the acceptance of hate into our society so long as it falls under a certain agenda. Even the existence and emergence of militia like groups such as “NFAC” (Not Fucking around coalition), “Boogaloo Boys”, and the “Proud Boys” seems to strengthen the idea that there may be violence in the future.

That’s not to state the left doesn’t have their own groups, with Antifa carrying symbols of communism and other dictatorial regimes all the while inciting violence in the Black Lives Matter protests. The wake of political violence is seriously something to be concerned about.

I read a report by Fox News about the Michigan supreme court’s decision to lift COVID-19 restrictions due to it infringing on idividual liberties.

They argued it was a severe overreach by a governor and in ways, it was. She was making her own laws without any other approval which is wrong. While I agree with her intentions and they were very good, I don’t know if shutting down he whole state is necessary.

I think there are times under the necessary and proper clause when it is relevant to overreach to protect citizens, but I think she went too far.

I’m not necessarily a fan of Fox or CNN, but I feel fox did a pretty good job explaining why the court made the decision it did.

I’m a huge fan of liberties and I think that’s the most important thing we can protect, but I am conflicted by how situation of COVID has been attacked. I got a perspective I’m not used to, and I think it’s an interesting perspective that I don’t get much.

The Future Burden

“I don’t care about being popular. I care about climate justice and a living planet.” Greta Thunberg stated at Katowice during her speech presenting to climate specialists.

Greta is a 15 year old activist from Sweden, and she gave an amazing insight into the perspective of the future. “The year 2078, I will celebrate my 75th birthday. If I have children maybe they will spend that day with me. Maybe they will ask me about you. Maybe they will ask why you didn’t do anything while there still was time to act.” She stated when asked about the future.

It’s an insight into the potential future. Especially in a world where we have depleted our natural resources and as we continue to use resources that are non-renewable we are at very high risk of simply running out.

The room intently waited on every line that Greta said, and she seemed to have the room in awe. She maintained the attention the whole time.

“We have run out of excuses and we are running out of time.” Greta stated as she began to bring the speech to a close. She is asking for all people to do something to change the climate situation across the world and in everyone’s communities.

Greta isn’t just a activist, she herself “practices what she preaches.” She lives with a very small carbon footprint and has created strikes in her own school to try to raise awareness. She isn’t alone, she was introduced to climate activism by her parents who also live with a small carbon footprint.

Declaring a winner (The 2020 presidential debate)

To say the least, that was awful.

Trump interrupted a total of 145 times, according to Fox News. Which is absurd, and there seemed to be no control over the debate by the moderator. Even Biden is quoted saying, “Will you shut up, man?”

And maybe Trump had it coming, but this is not actions that should be taken by two potential presidents of the United States.

“It was stupid. I don’t like how it is a giant pissing match and isn’t about politics. It’s just two old dudes yelling.” Bryson Janousek. Many people I talked to shared this same opinion, and for a debate between two potential heads of state, was embarrassing. The amount Ad Hominem attacks (Personal attacks) states how woefully unprepared both sides were. Biden seemed very well put together at times, however but falling to the “Trump Trap” often.

The Trump Trap: The Trump Trap is when Trump circles back, and then begins to try to overwhelm with irrelevant facts and attacks which will misdirect the rebuttal. Biden was no stranger to attacks, either. “It’s hard to get any words in, with this clown” Biden himself stated referring to Trump.

“So, that was an absolute mess. Whoever wins at this rate, will leave a large amount of people unhappy enough to create political violence” stated Kristine Honomichl. Even the existence and emergence of militia like groups such as “NFAC” (Not F*cking around coalition), “Boogaloo Boys”, and the “Proud Boys” seems to strengthen the idea that there may be violence in the future.

Striking A Balance

“It’s difficult to balance money for the firm, and making sure there is justice,” Steven Postolka stated.

Steven was a Morningside graduate, class of 2011 who double majored in Mass Communications and Political Science, then going on to graduate from Iowa law in 2014.

He originally didn’t plan on doing law, however. The political science department, and Mr. McKinley influenced him to go to law school.

However, he doesn’t enjoy crime movies or shows. “I don’t like to take my work home with me” he stated, which is completely understandable for a profession that can spend more than 40 hours a week working on cases, with 95% of the job falling outside of the court room. He is currently working for the city of Sioux City, and people like to sue the city.

Previously, he worked for a private firm and he tried to strike a balance between justice and bringing money into the firm, so he enjoys being paid salary now for the city where he can chase more justice based jobs. The pressure is relieved from Steven, because he doesn’t have to focus on just the money and trying to get the client to settle so it doesn’t cost more money. Instead he can chase justice, and what he believes in.

He also values the stability the city gives him. Being paid salary he never has to chase easy clients and easy money but instead can focus on the bigger more rewarding jobs.

Life is all about Balance, and Steven Postolka seems to have found his balance using his experience from Morningside College!

Needless to say, the presidential debate needs organization.

“Biden interrupted Trump 49 times and Wallace 18 times for a total of 67 times. Trump, meanwhile, interrupted Biden 71 times, Wallace 74 times for a total of 145 times, according to the analysis.” according to Fox News, Brooke Singman.

The debate lacked control as well as class. The interruptions and how the debate was handled by both parties lacked any skill or logical reasoning. They tended to devolve into logical fallacies such as ad hominem (a personal attack) and “moving the goal posts” (to change topic and the goal).

That’s not to say there isn’t potential, however.

““Last night’s debate made clear that additional structure should be added to the format of the remaining debates to ensure a more orderly discussion of the issues.” The CPD stated, wanting to create further organization in future debates.

I like this, they’re recognizing the faults of each side, and it seems to me like they’re looking critically at what can be improved in this situation. I think it is a decent assessment.

Louisville Police Confirm Two Officers shot, 9/23/2020

I read another article form CNN this week, this time about Louisville police taking fire from rioters and having two officers down. I don’t know when they will begin to call these riots, because the difference between a riot and a protest is the violent disturbance by a crowd…

This just makes me sad to view the media, it seems like CNN is justifying what could be considered the murder of police officers in Louisville. I think this whole situation is getting out of hand and is becoming more than just a protest, and by definition, it is a riot. This is full civil unrest, and I find that it is just tragic and makes me upset to see.

This is why I usually stay away from CNN, it is because I find the way to advertise their information to be at times poor. They don’t portray any of the media ethics and it seems like they just want attention, any and all attention.

Bryson’s Views on COVID

I had the pleasure of interviewing Bryson about the COVID situation on campus, he seemed to agree. There’s only so much the college can control, and they’re doing an excellent job minimizing exposures in every way they can but he also said he finds it stupid that people don’t listen.

“If we all just quarantined, it’d be over by now.” he stated, and he stated how it wasn’t going to stop partying on and off campus, which is only going to worsen the online situation. It was very informative talking to him about the subject.
