A former MLB pitcher who retired to become a police officer in New York City dies in a car crash on his way to a 9/11 memorial service.

Anthony Varvaro was assigned and on his way to attend the ceremony at the site of the World Trade Center when the crash happened. Varvaro was 37 years old and was in his sixth year of service at the time.

Vavaro has a wife and four children as well that are in deep grievance over the tragic loss of their husband and father.

Many of Vavaro’s former teammates, fans, and even some fellow law enforcement officers went onto social media to display their mourning for the passing of one of their close friends.

“On this solemn occasion as the Port Authority mourns the loss of 84 employees in the attacks on the World Trade Center — including 37 members of the Port Authority Police Department — our grief only deepens today with the passing of Officer Varvaro,’’ said Port Authority in a statement to CNN.

Before his time as a police officer, Vavaro played baseball at the University of St. Johns where he was a standout pitcher, earning him a chance to play in the MLB. From 2010 to 2015, Anthony had a total of 166 appearances on the mound playing for either the Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox, and the Atlanta Braves

Vavaro’s old college coach, Mike Hampton, was at a “loss for words’’ Fox Sports says. “Not only was he everything you could want out of a ball player, he was everything you could want in a person. My heart goes out to his family, friends, teammates and fellow officers,” Hampton said to the press as he still was in shock about what had happened.

Other MLB teams that Vavaro also played for sent their condolences to the families and friends that were affected by incident. “We are deeply saddened by the passing of former Red Sox pitcher Anthony Varvaro.” This was sent across all social media platforms from the Red Sox. The Atlanta Braves also sent their thoughts and prayers out as well, which was the team he played the longest for being 4 years.
