Religion #2

In the last couple of weeks, I’ve been learning about the axis mundi or the center point of the world. The axis mundi serves as the ladder to Heaven (where you want to be) or Hell (not the happiest place to be in) and we also discussed about the different religious centers around the world. Many people believed that if you live near the religious centers you have a higher chance or better access to Heaven. But, here’s the catch that’s what the people in that specific area of the country believe. According to the reading, Sacred Space not everyone in the world believe that a specific group or country is a religious center in the universe. Every country has their own “sacred space” and furthermore, they believe that their center is the actual center of the universe.

Yesterday, we had to draw pictures that explained parts of our reading, which was very difficult and interesting. I had a hard time thinking about what to draw, but I managed to pull out a teepee and J.C. as a descriptive image to my group’s assigned reading. I also discovered that everyone drew the Earth round, which at the time probably wasn’t. Since Prof. de Vega explained that they believed that the Earth was like a sandwich, Heaven was the top bread piece, Earth the goody in the middle, and Hell the bottom bread piece. It’s a funny way to describe it, but very accurate. I like to think that we all are the yummy peanut butter spread in between the bread because that makes us delicious.

Wow that was really interesting. I remember talking about that it was all really interesting. I like how you brought up the fact that it doesn’t matter if you live super near the axis mundy, you still could go to hell. It really reminds me that nothing in life is for sure no matter what you do. One question I have for you is that, who came up with the idea of the axis mundy?
So do you have any artistic ability? Because your picture looked really nice. Why did you choose to draw that picture?
Alright well great blog, cant wait to read the next one!

The axis mundi was kind of interesting to me because I had no idea that was why churches had steeples and monuments were built so high. Now, I realize that those structures symbolize a ladder to heaven. This explains why things like the Sargent Floyd Monument and the Washington Monument are so high. In Washington DC the Washington Monument is required to be the biggest thing in the city. Nothing is allowed to be taller than it. It is very true that people believe that living closer to the religious center is a better way to salvation. This is why some people want to be buried in church yards. Although Sacred Space didn’t make a whole lot of sense to me, I also picked up on the point that the actual center is the center of the universe. It was weird for me to think that the world shouldn’t have been drawn round. Apparently the correct drawing would have had a flat Earth with heaven above it and the underworld below it. I like your comment about us being delicious, it makes it a little easier to remember. I found that the readings were very difficult to understand, but you seem to have a great understanding of most everything. I hope that the readings don’t get any harder, but if they do, I’ll ask you for help!
