Story #4 (Final)

Kayla Harris profile.

Want to know more about one of the best volleyball player’s in Morningside History? Records being broke and awards being given, this student athlete deserves some credit as being at the top of the list for all-time greats at Morningside College.

Kayla Harris, the 2018 South Sioux City graduate; committed to Morningside during her senior year, and she never looked back. As a freshman, Kayla started varsity for the Mustangs and lead her team to a national tournament appearance. She also lead them to another National Tournament during her sophomore season.

In the first game of the national tournament of the 2019-2020 season, Kayla surpassed her 1000th career dig, only needing 4 when the game started. She plays in the Libero position, wearing the different colored jersey, and has been for the past 3 years. Kayla is going into her spring season due to Covid and a 4th year at Morningside.

Teammate Krista Zenk talked about Kayla and her volleyball skills, Krista stated, “Kayla is a stud on the court, it’s been awesome playing with her for the past 3 years and she’s also one of my best friends.”

Her Junior year (statistically), gathered 3 GPAC Player of The Week honors. She currently leads the GPAC in digs per set with an outstanding 5.8. With this being said, she now holds a few other records in the books.

These include career digs by a libero, single game digs by a libero in 4 sets, and season digs per set by a libero.

Krista Zenk knows all too well about Kayla’s achievements, “Oh yeah I know, a lot of people know, she’s one of the best libero’s in Morningside history.” stated Zenk.

When she isn’t playing volleyball, she’s coaching volleyball! Kayla is currently the assistant coach for a 16U club team here in Sioux City. She’s been coaching these girls for 4 years and wants to keep coaching until they are too old for 18U.

Kayla played at the same club that she currently coaches at her last 2 years of high school. Inspired about the level of play in the area of Sioux City and the Midwest, Kayla knew that she wanted to be involved with what made her a great volleyball player, amazing mentors and coaches at this club.

Morningside teammate and former coach next to Kayla, Kaelyn Giefer, had some good words to say about Kayla’s work ethic on the court and how it relates to her coaching.

“Kayla works really hard on the court, and she teaches her kids that same work ethic. She is very reliable and trustworthy on the court and I know that she will not let a ball drop without putting her body on the floor.”

Off the court, Kayla is known for being a great student, roommate and friend.

Currently she is studying Business Administration with a Marketing minor, and hopes to own her own business after graduation.
